It’s time to make your mark so here are a few tips to help you get organized and make the most of your stay.

Is Malta a good destination for a stag or hen do ?

Malta seems a good compromise among destinations, because from France or other European countries, you’ll find tickets with flights  and hotels for an affordable price.

Also, Malta is quite small, perfect for a weekend or 3-4 days, so there’s no need to rent a car, and the climate is good from April onwards. What’s more, there’s everything you could want for this type of occasion: beaches, visits, parties.

Create your hen or stag do with a local expert!

As is the case in other countries, a small, top-notch local agency specializes in stag and hen parties in Malta.

Get advice from a local stag and hen do specialist. He can help you tailor your stay to your desires and budget. Victor or one of his colleagues can then accompany you on site during your stay.

Compose your stay by selecting from the 41 activities and services on offer. See details and prices of activities here. (Shooting, Private boat, Quad, Limousine,…)

Activities and services you won’t find anywhere else in Malta!

Would you prefer to organize your stay yourself?

In that case, we’ll give you a few pointers here. However, you should be aware that tour booking platforms are often not suitable for groups of more than 5 people. In this case, we advise you to use Victor’s agency, as it saves time and often costs no more.

Accompany your Group Trip to Malta

Organizing a Group trip can be a real challenge. Whatever the country, the larger the number of participants, the more complicated it becomes to book suitable accommodation, organize activities and plan travel.

In Malta, being a small tourist island, tour operators can fill up pretty quickly. The arrival of groups must therefore be carefully prepared and insured.

The norm in Malta is that for groups of 15 people or more, it is highly recommended to be accompanied by a local agency who will contact the various players in your trip to plan your arrival. This will help you choose the most suitable hotels and services, and avoid disappointments and cancellations.

In this case, we give you the option of going direct through the local agency specializing in groups. Click here to contact a group travel expert in Malta.

For less than 15 people, it is still possible to book directly, but it is compulsory to book online before your arrival.

Why choose Malta for your group trip?

There are many reasons why Malta is an ideal destination for group travel.

    An ideal Mediterranean climate

Malta has a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, sunny summers. With an average temperature of 25 degrees, Malta is the perfect destination for groups looking to escape cold winters.

    A rich and fascinating history

Malta has a rich and fascinating history dating back over 7,000 years. With its megalithic temples, Baroque cathedrals and walled city, there are plenty of historic sites to explore for groups interested in history and culture.

And did you know that Malta was a popular location for films and TV series? Productions such as “Game of Thrones”, “Gladiator” and “Assassin’s Creed” have been filmed on the island. Groups can visit filming locations and go behind the scenes of some of their favorite productions.

    Breathtaking landscapes

Malta also has undeniable natural beauty, with crystal-clear seas, magnificent beaches and breathtaking rocky landscapes. Groups can explore the different regions of the island and discover breathtaking views.

If you’re a group of nature lovers, you can visit the San Anton Botanical Gardens, located in the town of Attard. The gardens are home to a variety of exotic plants and flowers, as well as diverse wildlife, including rare birds. And the wild island of Gozo, much less built-up than Malta.

Groups can also hike the Dingli cliffs, which offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. The cliffs are also an ideal place to watch the migratory birds that pass through the island every year.

All in all, Malta is a destination of choice for groups looking to explore a rich culture, fascinating history and magnificent nature. With its pleasant climate, historic sites and breathtaking scenery, Malta is the ideal place for your next group trip.

    Landscapes of Gozo

Organize your group trip to Malta

Organizing a group trip to Malta may seem complicated, but with careful preparation, it’s quite possible to have a successful stay.

    Find group accommodation in Malta

It’s important to find accommodation that can accommodate your whole group, and that’s close to the sites you want to explore. Malta is a fairly touristy island, so accommodation options are plentiful.

For groups of up to 15 people, you can find your own accommodation. You’ll be able to find a hotel that’s available to welcome you when you make a classic reservation directly on a platform. We recommend this article to discover for your group the best areas and hotelsto stay in Malta.

You can also find an apartment hotel to rent. Find here our selection of hotel apartments in Malta.

Last but not least, group travel to Malta is the perfect opportunity to rent a villa. Find here our selection of villas in Malta.

For groups of more than 15 people, you’ll certainly need to be accompanied by a local company. In this case, please contact the group travel agency recommended on this page.

If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, you could also consider staying at a traditional Maltese farm or on the Gozo side. These accommodations offer not only a unique experience, but also an excellent opportunity to sample the local cuisine. These are often not available on the platforms, so it’s best to have someone accompany you.

    Transport and travel planning

You should also organize transport and travel arrangements for the whole group. VTC cabs like eCabs are a quick and easy way to get around if you want to explore several areas of the island, but car rentals may be more practical if you want more flexibility.
However, driving on the left and the sporty driving style of the Maltese may discourage you from renting cars.

There are several options depending, once again, on the size of your group:

Are you a group of up to 15 people? We recommend that you first book your airport shuttle via this specialized service. You can reserve up to 3 cars. Prices are very affordable. The drivers will be waiting for you, monitoring your flight’s arrival time. Book your airport transfer here.

Once on site, you can set the pace for your stay by booking excursions with shuttles included. So you can make the most of your time on site without worrying about logistics. Book all your excursions well in advance. Find here the best excursions in Malta to book.

More than 15 people? In this case, you can be accompanied by to obtain dedicated shuttles adapted to the size of your group and the types of people in it.

An additional option to consider is renting scooters or bicycles to explore Valletta s narrow streets or for a relaxing day at the beach.

Prepare an itinerary to discover must-see sites

To ensure that the whole group can make the most of their trip, it’s important to plan an itinerary to discover the must-see sites. You should include plenty of time for sightseeing and must-do activities in your itinerary.

Book all your visits in advance. From May onwards, many tours and excursions are fully booked.

Let’s take a look at what not to miss on a group trip to Malta.

Must-do activities for your group in Malta

Malta offers a range of activities for groups to explore, whether they’re interested in history, culture or simply relaxation and leisure. The island is a true jewel of the Mediterranean, with its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches and spectacular scenery.

    Visit the capital, Valletta

Valletta is the capital of Malta, a fortified city dating back to the 16th century. It’s the ideal place to explore Malta’s history, with its museums, Baroque palaces and fortifications. Groups can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea from the city walls.

Valletta is also known for its cobbled streets and impressive churches. Groups can visit St. John’s Cathedral, home to a collection of paintings by Caravaggio, and St. Mary’s Co-Cathedral, one of Malta’s finest examples of Baroque architecture.

If you are up to 15 people, book your private guided tour of Valletta here.

    Explore megalithic temples

Malta is famous for its megalithic temples, which are among the oldest examples of monumental architecture in the world. Groups can explore historic sites across the island, such as the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra.

These temples were built over 5,000 years ago by a prehistoric civilization that inhabited the island. Groups can admire the carvings and engravings on the temple walls, which bear witness to daily life in those distant times.

Visit Gozo in a group, the wild island of the Maltese archipelago

If you’re visiting Malta, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the neighboring island of Gozo with your group. Gozo is renowned for its unspoilt natural beauty, crystal-clear waters and picturesque landscapes.

We recommend a suitable and original means of transport to share memorable moments of togetherness while discovering the treasures of this preserved island.

    Visit Gozo by quad

Depending on the age of your group, you can choose to visit Gozo by quad bike with an experienced guide. This is probably the most recommended excursion of your stay. You can rent a number of quads and ride two per quad. Shuttle, guide and meal included.

If you’re up to 14 people, find out how a day on a quad bike in Gozo works and get a discount when you book.

    Rated 4.9 out of 5

If you are more than 15 people, you can be accompanied or book directly, subject to availability.

    Visit Gozo by tuk-tuk

The tuktuk is an original 3-wheeled vehicle that is popular in Asia and is also often used on the island of Gozo. Up to six people can climb aboard, and the driver will be your guide. You can book several tuktuk and benefit from low prices with the organization recommended in this article.

    Visit Gozo by tourist bus

As Gozo’s public bus network is not very well adapted to tourism, it’s best to book a sightseeing bus that will stop at the various interesting stops to visit. This solution can be adapted for trips with small groups.

    Visit Gozo by Jeep

For the most comfortable way to visit Gozo, you can book a 4×4 jeep.

    Beaches and water sports

The Maltese archipelago also offers beautiful beaches and water sports for those looking to relax and soak up the sun. Groups can swim, snorkel, scuba dive or even try more exciting water sports such as jet-skiing and parasailing.

Malta’s most popular beaches are Mellieha Bay, Golden Bay and St. Moritz. St. George’s Bay. These beaches offer crystal-clear waters and activities for all ages.

Take a boat trip to Comino

For many, the most beautiful spot in Malta is Comino’s Blue Lagoon. It can be reached by boat from Malta or Gozo. There are many street vendors selling excursions, but for a group, I’d strongly recommend booking online, in advance, so you’ll have better guarantees of availability and cancellation if necessary.

For groups of less than 15 people, see our comparison of the best excursions in Comino to book directly :

Malta’s gastronomy is influenced by Mediterranean cuisine, and includes delicious dishes such as rabbit in sauce, stuffed calamari and the famous pastizzi. Groups can try out many local restaurants to discover the island’s typical cuisine.

Please note that reservations must be made well in advance for most restaurants. If you are a large group, you may be asked to pay a deposit at the most popular restaurants. For this other reason, it may be a good idea to have an agency accompany you.

Local Maltese wines are also very popular. Groups can visit the island’s vineyards to taste wines such as Girgentina and Merlot.

In short, Malta is an ideal destination for groups looking to explore the island’s history, culture and natural beauty. With its many activities, sandy beaches and delicious cuisine, Malta is a must-see destination for all types of travelers.

Practical tips for a successful group holiday in Malta

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your group holiday in Malta:

A specialized agency to support you

For groups of more than 14 people, if you’d like to organize a few visits, outings or activities, it’s a good idea to go through an agency that will organize and book with you. Indeed, large groups that don’t book properly in advance run the risk of being turned away or separated on a regular basis. It’s a situation we’ve witnessed every year.

In this case, we recommend using a recognized local agency specializing in groups. You’ll benefit from better rates for your bookings, on-site assistance, tailored advice in advance, a trip-tracking platform and shuttles to and from your destination. A dedicated stand with a representative will be waiting for you on arrival at the airport.

    Manage expenses and budget

It’s important to have an estimate of the total cost of the trip, and to divide it fairly between all members of the group. You can consider expenses such as airfare, lodging, transportation, activities and food.

Ask your agency for a quote for larger groups.

Malta is a popular tourist destination, so prices can vary depending on the season. It’s important to research and book in advance to get the best prices. You might also consider cooking some of your own meals to save money.

    Communicating and coordinating effectively

For a successful group trip, effective coordination is crucial. Create newsgroups or e-mails to share important information (flight times, tour schedules, etc.). Make sure everyone knows where you are and where you’re going at all times.

    Practice ecotourism in Malta https://mylittlemalta.com/ecotourism-malta/ https://mylittlemalta.com/ecotourism-malta/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 16:42:49 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/practice-ecotourism-in-malta/ What is ecotourism?

Ecotourism aims to preserve the environment and improve the well-being of local populations, while allowing tourists to enjoy the host land.

With the awareness of ecological topics in recent years, you can see that you are already aware of your carbon footprint in your everyday life. You recycle regularly, use as little electricity as possible and are careful with wastewater. Unfortunately, many of us don’t keep the habits we’ve learned on a daily basis when we go on vacation.

More and more eco-responsible or eco-conscious people are therefore looking for ways to not only improve their home environments, but also respect the nature of the places they visit. I invite you to discover the eco-tourism activities and accommodation available in Malta.

    Eco-Gozo

Visit Gozo! Indeed, Malta’s sister island aims to be an eco-island since 2020 by improving the quality of life of the local community through education, economic development and social progress brought about by becoming an eco-island. All this is supported by a committed community, aiming to achieve a balance with the environment.

    Housing

Malta has a few eco-certified establishments and the Malta Tourism Authority operates an internationally recognized eco-certification program. By choosing an ECO-certified hotel, you can be assured of a stay in an establishment that moderates its impact on the environment by regulating its energy and water consumption and reducing waste. This corporate responsibility significantly reduces the impact of the tourism industry on the environment through sustainable practices for Malta. For a current list of certified ECO HOTELS visit the MTA Eco Hotels website. To date, several hotels are eco-certified on the island, including the sublime Kempinski Hotel in San Lawrenz in Gozo. To obtain this label, hotels must meet a list of criteria allowing them to improve their environmental management performance.

    Ecotourism Activities in Malta

A number of companies in Malta offer eco-friendly and fun activities: for example, you can ride a Segway or an Ecobike, hike in Malta’s many spots or go scuba diving. You can also visit the falconry center in Malta. Finally you will have understood that the activities are numerous.

Permaculture Research Foundation Malta is a voluntary organization, whose aim is to preserve and maintain food security, agro-forestry and creative ecology.

Visit the Bahrija Oasis, where visitors can enjoy nature, while getting involved in a number of activities from harvesting fresh produce or cooking over a fire while observing the stars through a telescope.

Here you will have the opportunity to learn about sustainable living in a relaxing environment. Malta is a developing country where ecology is not necessarily very fashionable, and it is notably up to the tourists to set an example by adapting and respecting the environment they visit. We are very attached to these values.

Visit Malta in 3 days: Itineraries and tips https://mylittlemalta.com/malta-3-days/ https://mylittlemalta.com/malta-3-days/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 14:46:19 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/visit-malta-in-3-days-itineraries-and-tips/ Planning a long weekend in Malta, but don’t know how to organize it? We’ve done the work for you! What to do in Malta in 3 days? Don’t ask yourself the question anymore, to visit Malta in 3 days, here are the must-see places and our advice!

Day 1: Mdina and the northern beaches

    Morning: Mdina, ancient capital.

Your 3 days in Malta start with a visit to the beautiful Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta.

This walled city was the ancient capital, nicknamed The Silent city. Mdina is indeed quite quiet and cars (except those of the inhabitants) are not allowed to circulate there. Rebuilt in the baroque style in 1693 after an earthquake, it is definitely worth a visit. If you like old stones, you will be delighted!

To start your day with a bang, visit the St. Peter’s Cathedral Paul. Continue by walking through the small medieval streets. Don’t miss the panoramic view from the fortifications to the east of the city. Then stop by the Fontanella Tea Garden to enjoy one of their delicious cakes or even have lunch. You will be able to contemplate the view while enjoying the food.

Did you know that? The gate of Mdina was used as a set for the filming of the famous series Game of Thrones. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet Daenerys Targaryen or Jamie Lannister?

Here you can find moreinformation about Mdina.

A little extra: If you have enough time, finish your visit in Rabat, which is right next to Mdina. Its typical alleys and its Saint Paul basilica are worth a visit.

    👉View accommodations in Mdina

Afternoon: Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha Beaches

Looking for the beach in Malta? Or a sublime place to hike with magnificent views? Head for the beaches of northwestern Malta: a change of scenery guaranteed!

After visiting the secular and sometimes crowded Mdina, it is the perfect place to rest and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

As on most of the beaches, various activities are proposed: Stand-up Paddle, jet ski, pedal boat… even horseback riding on the Majistral plateau.

Do you like hiking? Then, go to the nearby beaches by the ridges and hiking trails!

Head south from Golden Bay beach (by road or cliff, both are easy to do – allow 30-40 minutes without forcing) to reach Ghajn Tuffieha, a wilder beach. Then leave the water’s edge and take a step up in the Maltese scrubland. Continue to the isthmus of Ta’ Lippija, absolutely sumptuous and all in clay. And there, surprise: a 3rd beach, more secret and thus authentically “Maltese” awaits you in the distance: Il-Gnejna. Your mission: to go back up to the plateau to play the masters of the world at the foot of the Ta’ Lippija watchtower, before going back down (a little steep but doable) to the parking lot of the Gnejna Bay beach.

Tip: In high season, My Little Malta advises you to come early to Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha for a chance to lay down your towel. In this case, reverse the morning and afternoon of our program.

👉View accommodations in the north of Malta

Read our dedicated article, to know the best beaches in Malta.

    Day 2: Visit of Gozo

Continue your 3-day stay in Malta by visiting Gozo.

Gozo is the second island of Malta, located northeast of the main island. To visit Gozo, one day will not be too much for you! Don’t be fooled by its size, this island offers many landscapes to discover.

    Going to Gozo alone

The island of Gozo is accessible by boat. To go by yourself you have the choice between :

    • Take the ferry to Ċirkewwa, on the north side of the island and enjoy the view from the upper deck.
    • Or take the fast ferry from Valletta. This second one takes you to Gozo in 45 minutes. However, it is not possible to stand on the upper deck.

In both cases, you arrive at the port of Mgarr.

    Organized excursions in Gozo

We think the best option is to book a tour with a local guide. It’s often affordable after all and it ensures that you get the most out of your time.

The best tours of Gozo are offered by the local operator Yippee Malta. They are rated 4.9/5, their vehicles are recent and the guides are competent. In addition, they will place you, if you wish, with a guide.

Attention: We recommend you to book your excursions in advance to avoid disappointment. In high season, they are always full several days before.

A driver will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Gozo by private boat (to avoid waiting at the ferry). On the way, you will discover Comino and its magnificent blue lagoon.

Several means of transportation are available:

1 – Excursion to Gozo by quad with guide

If the weather is good, we recommend this quad tour that you drive yourself with a guide during which you will visit the best spots of the island, you will have a local lunch and the explanations of the interesting points. It is the guarantee to spend a nice day with up to 2 people per quad.

Take advantage ofa 5% discount when booking on the Yippee Malta website with the promo code: LPM5

    Rated 4.9/5
    Direct booking with the operator

2 – Excursion to Gozo by tuk-tuk with guide

Si vous êtes plusieurs ou que vous préférez vous faire conduire, nous vous recommandons le tour de Gozo en Tuk-tuk. Tuk-Tuk excursion in Gozo

3 – Excursion to Gozo by jeep with guide

In colder weather, you may prefer the comfort of a jeep with driver to visit Gozo. In the same way, everything is included in this day, transportation, boat, lunch, English speaking guide, and the visit of Gozo by Jeep.

Click below to book your full day:

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before

One day trip to Gozo and Comino

You want to visit Gozo and enjoy the beaches of Comino at the same time during the day? It is possible. You will then take a half-day boat trip to Comino to enjoy the blue lagoon and other jewels of this small island and then a half-day trip to Gozo by Tuktuk. Top of the top:

How to get around Gozo on your own?

The most economical option is to take the public transportation system. However, this is not optimal and will make you lose precious time. We advise you to take the tourist bus with multiple stops . This bus allows you to get on and off at any time and anywhere you want. Ideal to discover a maximum of places in one day! In addition, the audio commentary is available in various languages.

If you want to explore Gozo on your own, it’s best to rent a car. Many choose to rent a quad bikefor exploring the island’s out-of-the-way places!

Citadel of Victoria, capital of Gozo

    What to visit in Gozo?

    Dwejra

The first place not to be missed in Gozo is the site of Dwejra, located in the northwest of the island. While the Azure Window sadly disappeared on March 8, 2017, the Dwejra site still remains a natural place to visit. The view is breathtaking with its cliffs, its inland sea called Inland Sea, the Blue Hole or its watchtower. The latter even has a Facebook page: Dwejra Tower.

    Rabat/Victoria

Then head to Victoria, the capital of Gozo (also called Rabat on the traffic signs). Stroll through its typical streets, go to the Basilica of St. George and then climb up to the Citadel. With a recently fully restored entrance, the citadel is the place to be in Victoria. There is no doubt that this magnificent walled city has a false air of Mdina, only quieter and more intimate. Explore its cathedral, medieval streets, and walk along the ramparts while enjoying the panoramic view of the whole of Gozo.

The capital of Gozo offers a number of restaurants where you can have lunch after this morning of sightseeing. If you prefer to have lunch by the water, go to Xlendi, a very cute little port. You will have a good meal of grilled fish (Lampuki, red tuna, sea bream and other Sea Bream… in sauce), typical of Malta.

    The temples of Ggantija

Then, go back 6000 years to visit the temples of Ggantija. Legend has it that giants built these temples, hence their name.

    Ramla Bay

Finally, head to Ramla Bay beach, located to the northeast. You will be amazed by its copper-colored sand, unique in the world. If you have time, walk to Tal-Mixta Cave, a cliffside cave accessible by a small path at the end of the beach. Its panoramic view is really worth a visit.

Tip: You can modify this program and choose to go to Dwejra at the end of the day. You will then be treated to a magnificent sunset over the sea.

If you go on a tour, your guide will tell you the impressive history of these different points of interest.

    👉See accommodations in Gozo

Day 3: Valletta and the Three Cities

    Morning: visit of Valletta

For this3rd day, the visit of Valletta, the capital of Malta, is on the program! Although small in size, it is large in history and beauty.

Access to Malta’s capital is easy: almost all buses converge there. If you rent a car, you can park in one of the parking lots located in Floriana, before the entrance to the capital.

In Valletta, you can get around on foot, and that’s also what makes it so charming. No cars driving in all directions, pedestrians are king in the Maltese capital! Start your visit at the entrance of the capital, where stands Triton Fountain, an impressive fountain. Then cross the bridge: on your right you’ll find the modern Parliament built by architect Renzo Piano, and the open-air theater(Teatru Rjal). Take time to wander around Valletta. Its charming and colorful streets, its sand-colored stone buildings, its impressive co-cathedral Saint-Jean invite you to look up and stroll around.

My Little Malta recommends a visit to the interior of Saint John’s Co-Cathedral. Its rather sober exterior hides an absolutely sublime baroque interior! You can also admire famous paintings by Caravaggio.

The Armory Museum and the Palace of the Grand Masters are also must-sees. Their visit will allow you to appreciate the history of the capital at the time of the Knights of the Order of St. John. Discover their lives and all that they brought to the Maltese archipelago: ease, security and architectural splendor.

If you want to feel like a nobleman and get an idea of Maltese culture, head to Casa Rocca Piccola.

Then have lunch at Is-Suq Tal-Belt, the famous covered market that will amaze your taste buds in a really nice and original atmosphere. Don’t forget that Valletta was until the end of the 20th century a poor working class city! So you’ll notice typical 70s-80s low-rent buildings as you continue your exploration toward Fort St. Elmo.

Finally, as 4:00 pm approaches, we’ll meet in theUpper Barrakka Gardens park. You will then witness the traditional cannon shot, which will sound throughout the Grand Harbour from Valletta to the Three Cities.

As you leave the garden, you will discover the Auberge de Castille standing proudly on a small square. This building originally housed the Knights of the Tongue of Castile, one of the most important languages of the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Auberge de Castille now houses the offices of the Prime Minister of Malta.

We tell you more about Valletta here.

Tip: With the My Little Malta discount card, you can enjoy a 30% discount on admission to historic sites and museums, including Fort Saint Elmo.

    GUIDED TOUR OF VALLETTA :

To discover all the history of Valletta, I recommend if possible to take a guided tour with a guide. Group tours take place 3 times a week for half a day.

    The tour often includes:

    • The guide and Valletta expert.
    • The entrance ticket for the unmissable co-cathedral of St. John
    • The show Malta experience.
    • If needed, a shuttle from your accommodation.

The visit will cost you 34 € per person. Otherwise, the price for a private tour with a private English-speaking guide is 200€.

    Afternoon: The Three Cities

Complete your 3rd day of visit with the Three Cities. Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua are authentic and full of charm.

Hop, we go down from Upper Barrakka Gardens by the vertiginous elevator! The ferry dock is opposite. For a unique experience, take a water cab (2€ per person). These traditional Maltese boats may remind you of the gondolas in Venice.

With their respective names Vittoriosa (Birgu), Cospicua (Bormla) and Senglea (Isla), the Three Cities are walled cities, known for their colorful streets, churches and palaces and their colorful religious festivals. It is particularly pleasant to walk in the typical streets of the Three Cities, quieter than those of Valletta.

In Vittoriosa, you can visit the Inns of France and England. These inns housed the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem from the languages of France and England. Then go for a walk along the quays and the ramparts. You can admire a wide variety of boats, including luxury yachts!

If you have enough time, we recommend you to visit Fort St. Angelo. This fort played a major role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. You will also enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the Three Cities and Valletta.

👉 Tip: You can enjoy (among other things) 30% off entrance to Heritage Malta historic sites with the My Little Malta card.

Finally, a short break is necessary at Vittoriosa Square. You will find charming restaurants where you can get your strength back before your departure. A great way to end your 3-day stay in Malta!

To learn more, check out our article on the Three Cities.

Tip: Since the Three Cities are not far from the Maltese airport, we advise you to visit them on the last day (about 15€ by cab to Luqa and the international airport).

Recommended full-day excursion every Wednesday and Saturday: Discover the three walled cities of Cospicua, Birgu and Senglea on a guided day trip. Admire the historic churches and squares before embarking on a cruise around Valletta’s Grand Harbor.

👉 Book yourguided tour of the three towns followed by a wine tasting.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before
    Book now, pay later
Pick up at your hotel included

👉See the accommodations in Senglea (The 3 cities)

Alternative day: Boat trip to Comino

If the weather is good and you like clear water, it is worth spending at least part of the day in Comino, the third island of the Maltese archipelago.

    The Blue Lagoon in Comino

In Comino, you will find especially the Blue lagoon and the Crystal lagoon. Beautiful places, but they can quickly become crowded with bathers in the middle of summer. You will also be able to see sea caves and the sea bed is spectacular.

There are many ways to get to Comino, but for 3 days in Malta, we recommend a boat trip.

The Sea adventure boat will take you to the Crystal lagoon and the Blue lagoon passing by some impressive natural monuments. A part of the bottom of the boat, being transparent, allows to see the sea bed while sailing, it is quite surprising and magical:

Staying in Bugibba or Mellieha would be a bit far from the airport, but Malta is small enough to cross in less than an hour (excluding traffic) and is a good destination for family vacations.

    Day 1

    Valletta

    moving to Malta Valletta
View of Valletta, capital of the Republic of Malta

The capital of the island is to be seen and seen again. With its different eras, it has kept its historical charm between peaceful streets and imposing fortresses. Today, this golden city is home to some of Malta’s most beautiful monuments. You can’t miss its Grand Harbour, a tangle of age-old coves that are unique in the world.
Generally, Valletta can be visited on foot. Before you begin your tour of the city, stop by Upper Barraca Gardens. Enjoy the beautiful view of The Three Cities.
Find in our dedicated article, the places to visit in Valletta.
If, however, you have bad weather in your week, Valletta is the right place to visit in Malta when it’s raining.

    Let us guide you:
To discover all the famous history of Valletta, we recommend if possible to take a guided tour of Valletta with a guide. They take place 3 times a week for half a day and the visit includes the entrance ticket for the unmissable co-cathedral of Saint John, the show Malta experience and if necessary a shuttle from your accommodation. It will cost you 55 € per person to be in a group. Otherwise, for a private tour with a guide only for you, the price is 200€.

In this article, we put links to activities and accommodations that we think are the best value for money. We have tested most of them ourselves. By clicking on the button below, you will get the same price as with the tour provider. You will then be able to make a reservation and you will receive all the instructions of the visit by email:

    Lodging in Valletta :
Valletta is very pleasant in the evening, buses and ferries allow to go easily everywhere on the archipelago, which makes it a good place to stay for a few days. However, there are not many hotels in Valletta so they are often more expensive than elsewhere on the island. Find accommodation in Valletta here.
For us and according to the ratings they received, the best hotels in Valletta (ranked in order of price) are:

    • Palazzo Paolina Boutique Hotel: The Palazzo Paolina Boutique Hotel offers beautiful rooms only 5 minutes walk from the Basilica of St. John. He has a bar.
    • La Falconeria Hotel: 4 star hotel with bar, gym and indoor pool.
    • Palais Le Brun: Located in central Valletta, Palais Le Brun features an outdoor pool, fitness center and terrace.
    • The Phoenicia Malta: The Phoenicia hotel is the ultimate in luxury in Malta. It has an infinity pool with a beautiful view of the harbor.

    The Three Cities

Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua are full of charming little streets where life is good! Some say it is Valletta in the old days, authenticity preserved. We bring you in this article to give you all the tips and things to see at the 3 cities!

    Recommended excursion:
If you like wine, every Tuesday we offer a full-day tour of the 3 cities with a guide , followed by a tasting of local wines. The tasting takes place in the Marsovin cellar which has existed for 400 years. Click on the button to read all the information.

👉 Book your guided tour of the 3 cities followed by a tasting of local wines by clicking here.

Lodging at the 3 cités :
I don’t necessarily recommend to stay at Les 3 cités unless you have a car, for 1 or 2 nights or if you are looking for quietness. To find out more about Senglea, click here (Les 3 cités)

    Day 2

    Mdina

Less than an hour from Valletta, Mdina opens the doors to a beautiful medieval walled city with an important history. It will delight you with its baroque cathedral, its small and quiet streets and its ramparts. “Very impressive” is what visitors say about this city with a strong heritage.
A little extra: visit the city in the late afternoon to take full advantage of the fading lights and the disappearing tourists!
More information here about Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta.

Very close to Mdina, Rabat is a small and discreet town, where history has left its mark. You will admire the Domus Romana and the Catacombs of St. Paul or St. Agatha, less expensive and just as captivating.

    Mdina

    Golden Bay

A little further west, past Mgarr, you can find one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta called Golden Bay. In summer, we advise you to come at the end of the morning if you want to be able to put your towel close to the water. The water is pleasant and you can swim easily. Different activities are proposed to you: jetski, buoy, pedal boat but also horseback riding (15 min walk).

    Recommended excursion:
To discover the history of Malta, the Mdina area is the perfect place. On a one-day guided tour, you’ll gain a better understanding of Malta’s history since the creation of the temples, and discover the magnificent scenery of the west: the Dingli Cliffs, the catacombs, the gardens, the presidential palace and, finally, Mosta.

👉 Book your guided tour of the Mdina area on the history of Malta.

    Day 3

    The island of Gozo

During your week in the archipelago, it is essential to make an escapade in Gozo . Indeed, this soothing island is full of places to visit, you need at least one day to do everything.

    Getting to Gozo by yourself

To get to the island by yourself and visit it, you can either Take the ferry to Cirkewwa, or the fast ferry from Valletta, then once there, you choose your means of transport: Quad, tourist bus, scooter, segway, buggy, electric bikes… The public bus is not very suitable on Gozo because you often have to go back through the center of Victoria to change direction.

With the My Little Malta card, you’ll get up to 20% discount on all these means of transport in Gozo.

    Organized excursion to Gozo

To visit Gozo in one day, what I recommend is to take a tour with a local English speaking guide. A shuttle will then pick you up at your hotel in Malta and take you to Gozo.

Tours with Yippee Malta, the local operator for Gozo, are affordable, highly rated (rated 4.9/5) and ensure you have a great day out with the guarantee of seeing the best of Gozo.

We list here the links to the best excursions in Gozo to be booked with a guide. Plus, you’ll get 5% off when you book with Yippee with the promo code LPM5

    Gozo by quad

You will be able to drive a quad bike yourself to the best places in Gozo. A local guide will take you to the best spots on the island. You can be 2 per quad:

    Rated 4.9/5
    Direct booking with the operator
    Free cancellation

    Gozo by tuk tuk

If you are several or if you prefer to be driven, I recommend this tour, which goes around Gozo by Tuktuka big 3-wheeled motorcycle with a guide. You can be 6 by tuk tuk.

The reviews are unanimous: everyone loves this day trip, and the drivers often have a lot to do with it.

    Gozo by tourist bus

Otherwise, it’s quite common for travelers to take this all-inclusive bus tour to Gozo, which proves comfortable and very convenient. Click here for booking information.

    Gozo by jeep

To have the great comfort and visit Gozo in the most efficient way, you can take a tour with a guide in a jeep as a safari! You will find all the information all the information to reserve by clicking here.

    What to visit in Gozo?

The city of Victoria (Rabat) is perfect for lunch after a visit to the Citadel. Then, head out to discover Dwejra where the symbolic Azure Windows rock arch stood before it disappeared in March 2017. Always sublime with its inland sea and its cliffs, the place is really worth the visit.

Don’t forget the temples of Ggantija and the beautiful beach of Ramla Bay with its coppery sand.

Read this article to find out all about what to visit in Gozo.

    Day 4

    The Blue Lagoon and Comino

Comino and its famous blue lagoon, a beautiful turquoise blue lagoon is indeed the most popular excursion in the Maltese archipelago. However, it quickly becomes crowded on weekends and especially in summer. Our little tip: enjoy the Blue Lagoon early in the day or after 4pm and also discover the bays of San Nicolas and Santa Maria.

Tip: If you don’t want to go to the ferry two days in a row, switch to the Day 5 program or book an excursion that will pick you up directly at your accommodation like this one:

The most famous excursion, very affordable (~€30) and often much appreciated, is to take the Sea adventure boat which takes you to Crystal lagoon and Blue lagoon. Book by clicking on the button below, and you’ll be able to choose whether you want to be greeted by English-speaking or English-speaking staff. What’s more, the bottom of the boat is transparent so you can see the seabed! :

Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute to book! You may be disappointed.

We also list here some day or evening excursions that take you to the paradise island Comino (same price as direct):

👉 To limit the crowd and enjoy the sunset on the boat, then take this excursion which lasts all afternoon until the evening by clicking here You will find less people than in the morning. This excursion will only cost you about 20€ per person!

If you have a larger budget, then treat yourself to a more luxurious catamaran trip to Comino:

👉 We recommend this version of a cruise to Comino for an evening on a catamaran. To reserve click here. (About 40€)

👉 But if you had to do only one, for me, it would be this day cruise on a catamaran to Comino to Comino and some of the most beautiful beaches and bays of the archipelago. (About 50€)

Alternative: Do Gozo and Comino on the same day

Indeed, if you prefer to do only one excursion and see everything in one day, it is possible to take a boat that will take you to the lagoons of Comino and then to Gozo! You might miss some nice visits, but you will optimize your time and money. In that case, you should book this excursion from the link below. :

Ghajn Tuffieha, Paradise Bay and Mellieha Bay

In the north of the island, you can find beautiful sandy beaches: Paradise Bay, Mellieha and Ghajn Tuffieha. As for Paradise Bay, it is a little before the ferry to the west (follow the parking sign). A beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs. The beach of Mellieha is a little further south on the east coast: very large, you can practice windsurfing, paddle or play volleyball… Do not hesitate to go for a walk in the village overlooking the beach. But be discreet because you will understand, at the rhythm of the swinging hammocks, that calm is a tradition.
Finally, for many the most beautiful of all, go west to reach the fabulous beach of Ghajn Tuffieha . It is a pure wonder, especially when you overlook it: unmissable photos guaranteed!

Accommodation in the north of Malta :
The Mellieha side of Malta in the far north is perfect for people with cars who want to relax on Malta’s beaches and stay in a great hotel. Find housing in Mellieħa here.
Here are the hotels we recommend, listed in order of price to Mellieha.

A little lower down, St Paul’s Bay is a compromise where you can find many bars, restaurants and nice walks to do on the esplanades, but no beaches. Here are the hotels that I recommend in this region:

    • Mayflower Hotel Malta: This beautiful hotel with pool, restaurant and gym is reasonably priced and 5 minutes from Bugibba.
    • Dolmen Hotel Malta: Located on the beach side of St Paul’s Bay, this large hotel offers sea views and features 6 pools and a private beach with free access. The on-site spa has a whirlpool, sauna and gym.
    • Park Lane Boutique Aparthotel: Enjoy your independence in this apartment hotel with rooftop pool and sea view.

    St Julians and Sliema

If you stay in the area, it is very pleasant to walk along the coast in the early evening. You can walk from Sliema Ferry and go up the Promenade to St Julian’s. Make a stop at Tigne Point, on the footbridge, and admire the view of Valletta at sunset: postcard effect guaranteed! Snorkelers, the rocks offer beautiful surprises when the waters are calm. In Balluta Bay, you can see the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church before heading to Spinola Bay . Here you will see fishermen preparing their boats and lovers taking a picture in front of the LOVE Monument.

St Julians also contains the top party spot in Malta: Paceville.

    Sliema: our choice for accommodation.
Indeed, it is in Sliema that we generally recommend you to stay, because it is ideally located, there are many hotels, restaurants, bars, a good atmosphere and it is very well served. Here we give you the best hotels and hostels ranked in order of price. Click on the name of the hotel to access its file on booking.

For party people, we recommend staying in the heart of the nightlife in St Julians. Here is our ranking of hotels in order of price:

A little bonus: the bay of Spinola, the gastronomic heart of the island, is also very pretty in the evening, when the lights of the restaurants reflect on the water. Many restaurants for all tastes and prices are present between Sliema and St Julians.

    Day 5

    Marsaxlokk

Small fishing village of 3500 souls, it offers authentic romantic colors thanks to its windows and its colored boats, the small Luzzus, emblematic boats of Malta. Some mornings there is a souvenir market, but the Sunday morning market is bigger with fresh fish and fruit stands. It’s time to take a lunch break and eat some good fish prepared “à la maltaise”! We recommend the restaurant Le Terrone, a small restaurant overlooking the port.

    👉 View accommodations in Marsaxlokk

    St Peters Pool

Do you like diving, jumping and frolicking in the turquoise water? Then go to St Peter’s Pool, the place is ideal and unforgettable memories await you!
    More information in this article!

It is also possible to visit this region from the sea, at least as well!
👉 Visit the south of the island, quiet, authentic and so beautiful, take a boat trip to Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk .

You stay more than 5 days or you would like to customize this program? We give you some ideas of the other best things to do in Malta, Gozo, Comino and around!

    Celebrating

If you like to party, Malta is a great destination.

Paceville is close to St. Julian’s and is a great place to go out. You can choose from different bars, different atmospheres. Admission is free (except on special nights) and drinks are often very affordable. Between bars and discos, you will feel like in Ibiza.

The atmosphere in Paceville is rather young. If you are looking for an evening with older people, head to Valletta.

Looking for an original evening? In addition to the bar parties, many boat parties are organized on Friday and Saturday nights! It’s a beautiful sailboat full of party people of all nationalities with a DJ and a bar, enough to have fun. There is only one provider who organizes this kind of parties, click on the button below to book. It’s the same price as direct.

What to do in Gozo? https://mylittlemalta.com/what-to-do-gozo/ https://mylittlemalta.com/what-to-do-gozo/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 06:58:37 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/what-to-do-in-gozo/ Are you looking for peace and quiet? Malta’s “little sister” is perfect for a promised stay rich in emotions and unexpected landscapes. Here is some information on what to do in Gozo…

    The must-sees in Gozo

    Rabat – Capital of Gozo

You can then visit the romantic walled city which is also the capital of Gozo. Also known as Rabat, its Citadel overlooks the city and offers an extraordinary panoramic view with a maze of alleys where you can still hear the footsteps of the Knights of the Order of St. John.

It could also be compared to the silent city, Mdina of the big sister island, which can be seen in the distance. Going back down to the old town, venture into the Basilica of Saint George. Dating from the seventeenth century, it is one of the most important churches on the island.
Its splendid gilded baroque decorations and its profusely sculpted marble are the visible traces of the devotion that the Gozitans devote to their God. The square of the same name (San Gorg in Maltese) is also worth a visit for its timeless atmosphere and its lively stalls all around.

Tip: Public buses are not well suited for visiting Gozo as you will always have to go back through Victoria and miss some points of interest. We recommend the tourist bus. More information and ticket here.

To see other ways to visit Gozo, go to this part of the article.

Dwejra – Inland Sea in San Lawrence:

This is where the Azure Window stood (collapsed on March 8, 2017 during a storm). Classified as a natural reserve and almost untouched by construction, the site stretches around a bay and its inland sea, the Inland Sea, a sort of immense collapsed cave that is truly unique in its kind. It is from here that fishing boats take tourists through the tunnel dug by the Mediterranean Sea. Walk along the surrounding cliffs to the Dwejra Tower with its magnificent view of Fungus Rock to the south.

Find the best hiking itineraries here.

    The small port of Xlendi:

Continuing south, you will arrive in the small port preferred by many Maltese: the romantic Xlendi. Tucked away and seemingly sitting there for hundreds of years, this village is perfect for a lunch break or a fish dinner. Walk along the cliff path on the right side of the bay where it is said that the nuns of the village used to bathe without fear of prying eyes.

    Farniente in Marsalforn:

Another possibility for lunch, this charming little seaside resort was once an active fishing port. Very popular in the summer, there are some great restaurants overlooking the bay.

A must-see on the west side of the city is the thousands of salt marshes carved into the rocky plateau. They adjoin caves and natural shapes carved by the wind all along this wild coast. A true lunar landscape, a paradise for photographers and romantics who will find an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Continuing westward, past the island’s great lighthouse, stop at the Ta Pinu Basilica in Gharb, identifiable with its huge bell tower standing beside it. In front of it, a walk is necessary between the 12 stations of Christ sculpted along the path that goes up to a place of pilgrimage very popular with the Gozitans.

The beaches of Ramla Bay and San Blas Bay:

Their golden red sand and the surrounding nature make them a true corner of paradise. Located a few kilometers from each other in the north of Gozo, they are definitely worth a visit. In high season Ramla Bay, the largest, is very (too) popular. Some straw huts are even open at the entrance of the beach to eat. But we prefer the wiser 2ᵉ, reserved for the more adventurous.

The fascinating UNESCO temples of Ggantija :

Built between 3600 and 3200 BC (before the pyramids of Egypt), they are located in the center of the island of Gozo, in Xaghra. Even if they have been under a pile of brambles for a long time, they are really very impressive and very well presented. Surrounded by an enclosing wall 6 to 7 m high in some places, the site was listed in the 18th century and its excavation began in 1828, followed by the last work in 1950.

The visit begins with a playful introduction to the daily life, rituals and artistic techniques of the Neolithic inhabitants. After this amuse-bouche, direction the temples. The southern one, although the older of the two, is the better preserved and larger. There are two altars, one of them in three parts and the remains of a fireplace. Once in the North Temple, you can see beautiful sculptures from the past.

From Malta, you can take an excursion with a English-speaking guide who will take you there and explain to you:

    Free cancellation
    Pick-up included from Malta
    Book now, pay later

If you prefer to visit on your own, know that you will have 30% reductions with the My Little Malta card on entrance tickets. (Valid in all Heritage Malta museums and sites)

Rotunda of Xewkija, the Maltese Taj Mahal :

In the small village of Xewkija with a few hundred inhabitants is the third largest unsupported dome in the world (and yes, notwithstanding Mosta, its Maltese rival). The rotunda of Saint John the Baptist, erected and consecrated in 1755, after the Second World War.

The dome, supported by 8 concrete columns covered with stones, is 75 meters high and has a diameter of 28 meters. Its weight is estimated at 45,000 tons! Decorated with modern paintings and sculptures, it has many stories to tell.

It is also possible to observe it up close by boarding an elevator built especially for visitors. From up there, you will have the opportunity toadmire the dome and a breathtaking view of the island of Gozo.

Tip: For fans of Festas, this is celebrated on the Sunday closest to June 24, the day of St. John the Baptist.

    Ta’Cenc Cliffs:

If you like outdoor walks, this is the place to be. These cliffs offer a splendid panorama. However, in order not to get lost, plan your walk. Indeed, these cliffs are not or hardly indicated, do not count on the presence of signs every 10 meters.

The highlight of the show Mgarr ix-Xini:

A small cove with clear water, you will have to walk a bit to get there, because the parking lot has only a few places and access is not easy by car. A tiny beach awaits you as well as a restaurant, the Mgarr ix-Xini Kiosk, where the filming of By the Sea took place in 2014 (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, sound familiar?). If you prefer to bring your own picnic, tables are also available to eat with your feet in the water… or almost!

How to visit the island of Gozo?

Recommended itinerary for a Weekend in Malta

Here is a two-day program (plus a bonus day) dedicated to the visit of Malta. You will discover the rich heritage of the archipelago and enjoy its dynamism. Don’t forget your sneakers!

Saturday: visit of Valletta and the Three Cities

    Saturday morning : La Valette

The capital of the island is to be seen and seen again. Strong of its different battles, it has kept its historical charm between peaceful streets and large fortresses. Today, this golden city is home to some of Malta’s most beautiful monuments.

Being relatively small, Valletta is easily visited on foot. Walk past Triton Fountain, the impressive fountain that stands at the entrance to the capital. Cross the bridge and you will find on your right the Parliament built by architect Renzo Piano and the open-air theater(Teatru Rjal).

Turn right and head towards the Auberge de Castille, which houses the offices of the Prime Minister of Malta. Continue to Upper Barrakka Gardens . It overlooks the Grand Harbour and looks out over the Three Cities. Try to be there at 12:00 or 4:00 pm to see the cannon fire on the Grand Harbour.

If you have to visit only one monument, choose the co-cathedral of Saint John. Don’t let its sober exterior fool you: the interior is magnificent. You will be impressed by its baroque decoration and the paintings of Caravaggio that it houses. My Little Malta advises you to go early (the cathedral attracts a lot of people and closes early in the afternoon).

If you have a little more time and it is open, you can also visit the Palace of the Grand Masters, which is currently the official residence of the President of Malta.

Continue your visit to Fort Saint Elmo, at the far end of the capital (admission €10 per adult). Finish your visit of Valletta with a lunch on the terrace.

To find out about other places to visit in Valletta read this article!

Tip: With the My Little Malta discount card, you can enjoy a 30% discount on admission to historic sites and museums, including Fort Saint Elmo.

    GUIDED TOUR OF VALLETTA :
To discover all the history of Valletta, we recommend if possible to take a guided tour with an English speaking guide. Group visits take place 3 times a week for half a day.

    The tour includes:

    • GUIDED TOUR OF VALLETTA :
    • The entrance ticket for the unmissable co-cathedral of St. John
    • The Malta experience show
    • If needed, a shuttle from your accommodation.

The visit will cost you 34 € per person. Otherwise, the price for a private tour with a private English-speaking guide is 200€.

Below are the links to book at the best price:

Also, if you have the My Little Malta discount card, you’ll get 15% off tours and excursions. Find out more about the card by clicking here.

    Saturday afternoon: The Three Cities

In the afternoon, it’s time to visit the Three Cities you saw from Upper Barrakka Gardens. Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua are full of charming little streets where life is good!

To go to the Three Cities, the best way is to cross the Grand Harbour by boat. Take the large elevator at the end of the garden and go down. At the bottom, cross the street: you will arrive at a pier. There are two possibilities: the ferry Valletta – Three Cities or the water cab. The second is a traditional Maltese boat that may remind you of the gondolas in Venice. You will disembark in Vittosiosa (Birgu).

Stroll through the small Maltese streets, quieter than those of the capital, and enjoy the views of Valletta. If you have time, My Little Malta recommends a visit to Fort St Angelo, which played a major role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. (The entrance will cost you 10€ per adult)

👉 Tip: You can enjoy (among other things) 30% off entrance to Heritage Malta historic sites with the My Little Malta card.

To learn more, check out our article on the Three Cities.

Sunday: visit of Sliema, St Julian’s and Mdina

Sunday morning: Sliema and St Julian’s

Sliema and St Julian’s are two very dynamic cities in Malta, located in the east of the island. This is where the population density is the highest.
With its many rocky beaches, it is very pleasant to settle down to enjoy the calm of the sea and the natural pools. In summer, you will see many family barbecues.
You can walk from Sliema Ferry up the coast to St Julian’s. Stop at Tigné Point on the footbridge and enjoy the view of Valletta on one side and the many boats on the other.
As you stroll from bay to bay, take a few seconds to sit by the water and admire the multitude of colors that are available to you. For snorkelers, the rocks offer some very nice surprises.
In Balluta Bay, you can contemplate the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Then head to Spinola Bay to watch fishermen prepare their boats and lovers take a picture in front of the LOVE Monument.
A little bonus: the bay of Spinola is also very pretty in the evening when the lights of the restaurants are reflected on the water.
Many restaurants for all tastes and prices are present between Sliema and St Julian’s. Here are all the ones we tested for you: the Surfside Bar Grill where we love to meet in Malta, the café bistro Il-Gabanna and its breathtaking view of the sea, the Badass Burger to eat a gourmet hamburger, the Bar Resto Balluta Bar for an authentic atmosphere, the boat restaurant Guadalupe, Ta’ Kris restaurant and its Maltese specialties, Shiva’s restaurant for a getaway to India, Fresco’s and its sea view, Zest and its view of Spinola Bay.

    👉 View accommodations in Sliema

    Sunday afternoon: Mdina

Less than an hour from Valletta, Mdina opens the doors of a superb medieval fortified city. Baroque cathedral, small streets and majestic walls: that’s all Mdina has to offer. To get there from Sliema or St Julian’s, you can take the bus (a connection will be necessary in most cases) or a rental car (two parking lots are located at the entrance of the city).

To enter Mdina, cross the gate, famous thanks to the series Game of Thrones. Former capital of Malta, Mdina is nicknamed The Silent City. You will quickly understand why as you stroll through its small medieval streets: the silence that reigns there contrasts with the rest of the island.

My Little Malta recommends a visit to Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Its baroque interior is worth a visit. However, it is closed on Sundays, but so is the co-cathedral of St. John in Valletta, so the choice is yours.

At the end of Mdina, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Malta from the fortifications. Then take a break at the Fontanella Tea Garden to enjoy some good pastries while admiring the view.

A little extra: to visit in the late afternoon to fully enjoy it!

If you have some time left, take a trip to Rabat, the village next to Mdina.

Bonus for an extended weekend: Gozo and Comino

If you are lucky enough to be in Malta for a three-day weekend, take the opportunity to discover the two other inhabited islands of the Maltese archipelago: Gozo and Comino.

There are two options for visiting them:

Option 1: Focus on Gozo or Comino

You like to take your time to visit? It is best to choose one of the two islands. If you are looking for historical places and old stones, choose Gozo. If you prefer to enjoy the sea and the sun, opt for Comino (see our recommendations in the following article).

    Gozo

To get to Gozo on your own, you can take the ferry to Ċirkewwa and enjoy the view from the top deck. There is also the fast ferry from Valletta. This second one takes you to Gozo in 45 minutes.

From the port of Mgarr, take a bus to Victoria (also called Rabat), the capital of Gozo. Stroll through its typical streets and visit the Citadel. Many restaurants are available for lunch. Another must-see place in Gozo is Dwejra, where the old Azure Window was located.

As Gozo’s public transport network is not optimal, a good idea might be to take the Malta Sightseeing tourist bus . You can get on and off at any time and anywhere you want. Very good to discover different places in one day while keeping your freedom. Audio commentaries are available in english

To get the most out of it in one day, we still advise you to take a tour or day trip with a local operator like Yippee Malta. They are generally affordable and there is something for everyone, whether you like to be carried along or to mix freedom and practicality.

We recommend that you book your excursions, visits and rentals in advance to avoid disappointment.

A driver will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Gozo by private boat (to avoid waiting at the ferry). On the way, you will discover Comino and its magnificent blue lagoon.

Several means of transportation are available:

1 – Excursion to Gozo by quad with guide

If the weather is fine, we recommend this self-piloted quad tour with a guide, during which you’ll visit the island’s best spots, have a local lunch and hear explanations in English of the points of interest. It’s a guarantee to have a great day. You can be 2 per quad.

Take advantage ofa 5% discount when booking on the Yippee Malta website with the promo code: LPM5

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before
    Pick-up service included
    Book now, pay later

Option 2: Discover Gozo and Comino in one day with a boat trip

👉 You don’t know what to choose between Gozo and Comino? Visit both! This is possible thanks to organized day trips by boat.
The one we recommend is to take a half-day boat trip to Comino to see the blue lagoon and other jewels of this small island and then a half-day trip to Gozo by Tuktuk. Top of the top:

Where to stay in Malta during your weekend?

To be central and close to the airport, we recommend you to stay in Valletta or Sliema for your weekend.

For the party, we recommend St Julian’s.

Indeed, with its variety of landscapes and activities, the island is suitable for groups of friends and couples in love as well as families with children. With affordable rates and a feeling of great security, the country is ideal to go on holiday with your children with peace of mind. One thing’s for sure: you’ll always feel very welcome as a family! Maltese people are friendly and will be very attentive to your children’s needs.

Here are some ideas of activities or visits (paid or not) to do for those who have planned a family stay in Malta:

A family trip to the beach in Malta

    golden-bay

The perfect opportunity to relax while your child builds sandcastles. For this, go to the beautiful sandy beaches in the north of the island. The three most suitable for children are: Mellieħa Bay (very gentle slope into the sea and easy access), Gnejna Bay (very popular among Maltese, large parking lot) and Golden Bay (recessed and very pleasant). These beaches have the advantage of being supervised during the summer. In the south there is also a large, child-friendly beach in downtown Birżebbuġa with crystal clear water that shows the spectacle of the commercial port and its cranes in the distance.

Find here the best beaches in Malta.

A boat trip to the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino is really the place to be when you come to Malta for several days with your family. Here’s how to make your stay unforgettable: by embarking on an authentic and very comfortable boat for children. Click here to see the boat trip.

The boat has an air-conditioned cabin where little ones can play safely during the hot summer months, as well as a relaxing solarium area on the upper deck for mothers in search of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin!
Practical, you can stay on board or come back just after having taken a dip, as the boat does not leave its landing place in Comino. The island is indeed very rocky and not very practical for walks with children under 4 years old (avoid strollers, unless you have a real buggy).

A breath of fresh air in a playground

    Malta_-_Attard_-_Ta'_Qali_BOV_Adventure_Park_05_ies

Most towns have a children’s playground, and Sliema has two (one in Tigné, on the sea side, and one just before St Julians).
