Why an internship in Malta?

The motivations are multiple, here are the main ones:

First of all, English remains the main attraction for students wishing to take advantage of this internship period to improve their skills and feel at ease in an English-speaking environment.

In second place, we must admit, is the desire to combine work experience and holidays. The good weather, the sea, the outings and the festivities are the stuff of Maltese legend, attracting trainees from all over Europe and particularly from France.

The third reason, which should not be overlooked, is the fact that you will be doing your internship in a specific sector of activity which is particularly well developed in Malta: e-gaming, marketing and digital marketing, hotel and restaurant industry.

The internship is an important moment in the life of a student. Instead of telling you how to make your English CV or painting a picture of Malta, I prefer to give you the useful information you need to make the right decision and find your internship in Malta.

What you need to know before looking for an internship in Malta

Before we talk about how to find an internship, let’s start with the things you need to know when doing an internship in Malta:

  1. Internships are rarely paid in Malta, regardless of their duration or the type of assignment offered.
  2. There are placement agencies to help you find accommodation and internships. This will help you avoid scams and make your life easier.
  3. Many companies see interns as a small hand to carry out tasks that are not very rewarding, and sometimes of little interest to the intern.
  4. Some companies offer free housing for interns, but the housing conditions are not always suitable and respectful of the interns. This is a very diplomatic way of not saying that some housing is …. (choose your word)
  5. Maltese companies only respond to trainees that interest them. If you don’t receive a reply after several emails, it’s probably because the company has nothing to offer you.
  6. Accommodation in Malta is rented for a period of 6 months or more. If your internship is for less than 6 months, you’ll end up renting seasonally (too expensive) or sharing a flat (not easy to find).

If you haven’t changed your mind, you’re ready for an unforgettable work experience in Malta!

How to find your internship in Malta?

Internships in Malta are rare compared to the number of requests companies receive. Competition is fierce and scams are a regular occurrence when responding to ads or in facebook groups. That’s why, unless you already have contacts, we recommend you go through an agency.

Internship placement agencies

There are all kinds of agencies out there, and you need to make the right choice. Some of them simply put you in touch with companies. Others offer a real support service to help you find an internship, accommodation and the services you’ll need.

Send us your details to be put in touch with a recommended local agency.

You’ll receive free advice on your internship, accommodation, activities and possible English courses.

Apply for internships yourself

Unless you are lucky, looking for an internship is always a bit difficult, but not impossible.

CV and cover letter must be clear, precise and written in English. I say “written” and not just “google translated”. We always have a good friend who can help us when needed.

Applications can be made by email. This does not shock anyone in Malta, quite the contrary.

First, you need to find a list of fifteen or twenty companies that meet your search criteria: profession, size, location, etc. Contacts can be found on company websites or on linkedin. The Maltese communicate their business details quite easily on the Internet.

Companies recruiting the most interns in Malta

  • Online gaming and casino companies
  • Lawyers, accountants and corporate service providers
  • Digital marketing company: affiliation, social media, blogging, SEO, SEA, etc.
  • Tourist attraction companies: amusement parks, diving, boat trips, etc.
  • Hotels, restaurants, bars
  • Real estate agencies (Frank Salt, Dhalia, Remax, etc.)

How do I approach companies in Malta for an internship?

To approach Maltese companies for an internship, I advise you to write two standard emails:

  • A first one to introduce ourselves and to make the first request. We have to get to the point. The email should specify the type of assignment you are seeking, your level of English, and the dates and duration of the internship. It is better to have a concise message than a long speech that will be thrown away because the recipient does not have enough time.
  • One to remind you in a week or two to show your motivation.

If your English is good enough, don’t hesitate to call, it’s always more efficient. Calling a Maltese landline number is free of charge for all flat-rate offers in France (especially from landline to landline).

Avoid scams for your internship in Malta

If the company offers you an internship without asking too many questions, it is not very reassuring. Even after a few rejections, when you get a positive response, don’t run with your eyes closed. A serious company will respect your questions and will never hesitate to give you precise answers to reassure you.

Indeed, we know of several cases where the student was forced to leave the company after a week or two after having paid for travel, accommodation and sometimes the placement agency.

Fortunately, in most cases, everything goes well and the student finds a good assignment that fits well with their goals.

Finding accommodation for the duration of your internship

Finding affordable accommodation close to your internship on your own is often harder than finding your internship this year. Unless your internship lasts at least 6 months, then your accommodation will often be quite expensive. Let’s take a look at the different types of accommodation available in Malta during your internship.

Real estate agencies

It’s a pretty effective solution for finding an apartment on your own when you’ve got a very good budget, i.e. at least €1,000 a month.

Airbnb

Go and see for yourself, the prices are exorbitant. You’re competing with tourists, who are often willing to pay much more than you for a night’s stay.

Facebook groups

On the various Facebook groups for English people in Malta, you will sometimes find offers of accommodation. But be warned, we’ve met many students who have been ripped off. Indeed, you’ll often have to send a bank transfer or a cheque to reserve, with no guarantee of finding your accommodation on arrival.

Accommodation at placement agencies for trainees

Some employment agencies offer accommodation for students and trainees. You rent a room, either on your own or with a friend. There’s often a kitchen and sometimes communal areas for socializing.

It’s honestly the safest and, above all, the cheapest option you’ll find.
Make an inquiry to see what accommodation is available for you.
