Being very religious, the carnival is a long-standing tradition in Maltese life. Indeed, it was in 1535, when the knights of the Order of St. John settled on the island, that the first carnival appeared in Malta. Since then, it has taken place every year in February, seven Sundays before Easter, just before the beginning of Lent.
During these few days, the whole archipelago is punctuated by festivities of all kinds. Two different atmospheres can be distinguished. On the one hand, the carnival of Valletta and Floriana as well as the Victoria Carnival in Gozo and, on the other hand, the inimitable event that takes place in the village of Nadur.
The carnival of Malta
A family atmosphere in the heart of the capital and its neighboring city.
All year round, Maltese people prepare to compete in the big parades of Valletta and Floriana. For 5 days, the streets are transformed into a real stage for a colorful show. On the program, parades of numerous floats representing all kinds of people, animals or mythical creatures accompanied by bands and dancers with ever more impressive costumes.
In addition, the food stalls you can taste the traditional pastry that Maltese people used to cook for this time of the year: the “Prinjolata”. This bell-shaped cake is made of almonds and eggs, covered with meringue and decorated with chocolate and cherries. Being quite large, it is usually sold by the share, but it is also possible to find it in individual format.
As soon as the night falls, the partygoers still dressed up continue the party in the restaurants, bars and clubs in Paceville known for its lively nightlife.
Carnival in Gozo
An equally festive but different atmosphere in Nadur.
On the Gozo side, although the festivities in Victoria (the capital) are very similar to those in Valletta, it is the celebrations in the village of Nadur that have made the reputation of Gozo Carnival.
Indeed, the Nadur carnival is spontaneous and is today very rooted in tradition. Nothing is prepared in advance, it is a gathering of many revelers dressed in strange, grotesque and funny costumes on a small square in the city.
Particular atmosphere that can be somewhat macabre, this one is more for the party people than for the families. For example, some rather strange acts can take place, such as carrying dead animals in cages or throwing food into the crowd. But don’t worry, in a more conventional way, you can listen to bands in the streets or go for a drink in picturesque bars.
Finally, to close these five days in beauty: costume ball, final parade in Floriana and a fireworks display on the port Marsamxett.
As you can see, there is something for everyone, it’s up to you to choose the atmosphere you prefer.
