But what’s Playmobil doing in Malta? A park to visit, but above all a story to know before you go.
Important: Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to visit the Playmobil factory, but the park and the store remain open.
Over 50 years ago now, a toy design empire was born (in Germany): Playmobil. The latter will mark many generations and several million children (or grandchildren). However, few people know that the brand’s development is partly due to its factory in Malta, one of its first foreign-based factories and their second largest.
The history of Playmobil in Malta
The common history of Malta and the Playmobil brand begins in the 1970s. At that time, Geobra Brandstätter (a German family-owned toy company) asked its creative director(Hans Beck) to develop smaller, less expensive toys in terms of raw materials. Thus were born the first Playmobil figures and the brand of the same name.
With the success of its new product, the company decided to set up in Malta because of therising costs and the lack of manpower in Germany. The impact on the Maltese economy was immediate. The island factory sees its number of employees and its production capacity grow steadily (probably the “Maltese Touch”).
The love story between the brand and the archipelago continues as it created a“Playmobil Funpark” in Hal Far near the factory in 2004. This park offers the opportunity to all miniature aficionados to play and interact with them in a proper, fun and safe environment.
