Where to live in Malta?

It is in the heart of the Mediterranean, not far from Sicily and the Maghreb, that we find the densest country in the world: the Maltese archipelago. Its main island, Malta, is 27 km long and 14.5 km wide. Between the very advanced urbanism in some areas and the typical villages in the center of the island, you will easily find the place to live and feel good in Malta.

The main regions of the archipelago where it is possible to live are: the northwest coast, the center, the eastern region, Valletta and the three cities, the southeast coast and finally the island of Gozo.

Living in the north of Malta.

In summer, many Maltese come to live in the north of the island. Indeed, offering exceptional views of Comino and Gozo, this rocky and rugged coastline represents an idyllic place to live. The resorts of Bugibba and Qawra are very popular for their affordable prices compared to other parts of Malta. The walk along the sea as well as the small village of St Paul’s Bay and its elusive view of St Paul’s Island make the charm of these seaside resorts.

The largest sandy beach in Malta can be found further north at Mellieha. But there are others towards the northwest of the island: Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Paradise Bay. As for real estate, it is in the northern region that one can find small budgets, by its distance with the eastern region which is the economic lung of the island.

Living in Sliema or St Julians

Many expatriates choose to live in the eastern region. Grouping the cities of Saint Julians, Sliema, Gzira and Ta’xbiex. Indeed, this region can be attractive for its many restaurants, shopping centers and attractive nightlife. What’s more, it’s close to everything, so residents don’t have to own a car. Very dynamic thanks to the numerous companies that are established there, this area is in perpetual urbanization. The accommodations near the coast have become very expensive, but it is still possible to find reasonably priced accommodation away from the waterfront.

Living in Valletta

Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a real open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is located on the northeast coast of the island. With about 7000 inhabitants, it is the smallest capital in Europe. Endowed with an unparalleled charm by its period buildings and its straight streets, it is in the evening, when the tourists withdraw, that it finds calm and energy. There are mainly apartments, townhouses or former palaces. Recent housing is rare because of the city’s desire to protect its image. For those in search of peace and serenity, there are three cities: Senglea, Vittoriosa, Cospicua. With splendid views of the capital, it has the style of the capital but with a village feel and townhouses.

Living in Mosta, Naxxar or Rabat

The center of Malta, ideal for those who wish to live in a quieter place.

It offers a Mediterranean lifestyle and Maltese culture, especially in Mosta, Naxxar or Rabat. With very interesting prices, you can find townhouses and typical Maltese houses. While the walled city of Mdina is very popular with retirees.

Living in the south of Malta

Marsaxlokk

Characterized by fishing villages and quiet bays, the south offers a glimpse of rural Maltese life.

It is also where Mnajdra and Hagar Qim, two prehistoric temples, are located. In Marsascala and Marsaxlokk, two very pleasant seaside resorts, there are beautiful buildings at very attractive prices.

Living in Gozo

Ramla Bay, Gozo

Finally, the island of Gozo is a true haven of peace and is less populated than its neighboring island.

Living in Gozo will offer you a more peaceful and quiet daily life with a greener and more rural environment than Malta. From charming farmhouses often equipped with private pools to apartments with spectacular sea views, there is a wide range of choices and much lower prices than on the main island. Discover the island of Gozo.
