Comprising a series of seven caves located in Zurrieq, on the island’s south coast, the Blue Grotto is a veritable spectacle of nature. Its name comes from the azure reflections of its translucent waters on the cave walls, a breathtaking natural spectacle, particularly visible during the day.

What to do in Blue Grotto

Boat excursions

As nature and travel lovers, we were lucky enough to enjoy a unique experience during our recent visit to Malta: a boat trip to Blue Grotto. We’d like to share with you the magical moments we experienced during this unforgettable adventure.

From the charming port of Wied iz-Zurrieq, we boarded a“dghajsa“, the traditional Maltese boat. This picturesque boat took us through the blue waters, skirting dizzying cliffs and entering mysterious caves.

Among the many caves we explored, the Grotte de la Réflexion was a particular highlight. Its name comes from the spellbinding reflections that the water casts on its rocky walls, creating an absolutely fascinating light show. We were mesmerized by the dance of light that played out on the cave walls, a palette of colors ranging from intense blue to emerald green, creating a superb spectacle.

blue grotto boat trip

It’s important to note that, like any outdoor adventure, this tour comes with its share of challenges. Weather conditions can be changeable, and excursions may have to be cancelled in the event of rough seas. What’s more, the “dghajsa” are small boats, which could be uncomfortable for those prone to seasickness. However, we sincerely believe that the beauty and magic of this experience far outweigh these minor inconveniences.

Our boat trip to the Blue Grotto lasted about 30 minutes, but the memories you’ll make seem to extend far beyond that. It’s an experience we recommend without hesitation.

Blue Grotto boat tour prices

Visiting the Blue Grotto by boat is pretty accessible. For the boat trip, fares vary slightly depending on the season, but expect to pay around 8-10 euros per adult and 4-5 euros per child.

Please note that there are no ATMs at Wied iz-Zurrieq, the pier from which boats depart for the Blue Grotto. It is therefore advisable to bring enough cash to cover the costs of the visit.

Diving

blue grotto wreck diving

The Blue Grotto is a diver’s paradise. The wreck of the Um El Faroud oil tanker, sunk in 1998, has become one of Malta’s most popular dive sites. Resting at a depth of around 35 metres, the tanker’s imposing structure and the marine life that has taken refuge there make for a striking sight. Experienced divers will be delighted to explore this unique site. For beginners, the Wied iz-Zurrieq reef offers a variety of fish and invertebrates, including barracuda, cuttlefish and moray eels.

Swimming

Although direct bathing from the caves is not recommended due to the rocky walls, on a boat trip during high season, it is possible to dive into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. The waters are generally calm and clear, allowing you to admire the seabed and coral formations while cooling off.

Hiking

There’s more to the Blue Grotto than a simple boat trip to discover its majestic caves. For walkers and nature lovers, hiking trails lead to unspoilt spots. Here you can picnic and enjoy the tranquility of the coves. You can also swim in complete peace of mind.

These hiking trails, stretching along the steep coastline, offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea and the diversity of local flora and fauna. It’s an exceptional way to immerse yourself in the Maltese landscape and discover lesser-known but equally enchanting aspects of the Blue Grotto.

Getting to Blue Grotto

Organized trips to Blue Grotto

Taking a day trip can be a great way to make the most of your time. You can visit some of the must-see places in southern Malta in just one day. Here are the excursions you can book with complete peace of mind:

By bus

Travelling by bus is an economical and environmentally-friendly way to get to the Blue Grotto.

If you’re planning to visit the surrounding area of the Blue Grotto at the same time, we recommend taking the tourist bus. It will enable you to stop at points of interest in the south of the island more easily than the public bus.

Take bus number 74 from Valletta will get you to the site in around 45 minutes to an hour. The bus is certainly slower than the cab or car, but it has the advantage of being more affordable(2 euros/person), which is an important criterion for travelers on a tight budget.

By cab

If comfort and speed are your main concerns, then taking a cab or using a VTC app like eCabs is the way to go. A cab ride from Valletta to the Blue Grotto usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, which is ideal if you’re short of time. These services offer quick and easy booking , making your trip stress-free. However, bear in mind that the cost of a cab or VTC will be higher than that of a bus, and that fares can fluctuate depending on traffic and the time of day.

By car

Finally, if you value independence and flexibility, renting a car may be your best option. By car, you can reach the Blue Grotto from Valletta in around 20-30 minutes. Renting a car costs an average of 35 euros a day, but gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, stopping along the way to discover other places of interest.

Its turquoise waters have nothing to envy to the Maldives or the Seychelles! Comino: the paradise of Malta! Its magnificent blue lagoon and its wild landscapes enchant divers, hikers and photographers.

No cars on this natural reserve of about 3Km2, a single hotel open from March to November. The island with the scent of cumin also has beautiful stories in store for you, populated by pirates and knights…

The must-do of your trip to Malta is to take a boat trip to Comino to discover its blue lagoon, crystal lagoon and other natural gems.

Find our comparison of the best excursions in Comino at the end of this article:

The beaches of Comino

Blue Lagoon

With its Polynesian look, Blue Lagoon is THE spot in Comino. The azure blue lagoon extends to the tiny islet of Cominotto. A sheltered cove with sparkling and translucent water, its bottom is so clear that you can observe the white sand and the fish from the surface!

In summer, it is difficult to play Robinson Crusoe, but you will find all the amenities and dive into 28° water!

Blue Lagoon Aerial View (13)

Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay

Perhaps less enchanting but just as beautiful as Blue Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay, two other fine sandy beaches to be discovered north of Comino. Located 20 minutes walk from the lagoon, they offer equally clear water with a more peaceful atmosphere. The few maritime pines of Santa Marija Bay will offer you some shade.

The underwater world of Comino

comino diving

Its caves, its labyrinth of passages, its transparent water at 28° in summer! How can you resist! Comino is world famous for its scuba diving sites. Its underwater relief shelters big groupers, digging anemones, soft corals, red sponges…

Find here our article on diving in Malta.

diving gozo

A favorite place for underwater photography and night diving, Comino leaves an indelible impression on everyone, from beginners to experienced divers.

There is only one school that offers first dives and packages. Many professional clubs in Malta and Gozo organize “dive days” on the island: you get equipped and dive from the boats.

Shallow, the Blue Lagoon is particularly suitable for beginners. And snorkeling can be done from the beach as well as from the rocks. A mask and a snorkel are enough to explore the fauna and flora of Comino.

Hiking in Comino

The circular tour of Comino takes about 4 hours. Make sure you have a good pair of shoes, because the ground is uneven: there are no roads, only dirt paths. Once up from the Blue Lagoon pier, you’ll discover countless hiking trails and a breathtaking view of the jagged cliffs.

discover comino

Spring is the ideal time for hiking on Comino. Arid and deserted in summer as well as in autumn, the island transforms itself: bushes of wild thyme, cumin, fennel perfume your walk. There are approximately 300 species of plants and flowers: Notice to botany and photo lovers!

The history of Comino

Inhabited since the Roman period, Comino has a history as eventful as Malta and Gozo. In the Middle Ages, its coastline of cliffs with deep caves was a real pirate’s den. Its caves and coves are used as a hiding place to better scuttle the ships cruising between Malta and Gozo and hide the booty. In the seventeenth century, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem used Comino as a private hunting ground for wild boar and hares. Later, in 1800, when the British army regained control of Malta, Comino became a place of deportation for hundreds of French prisoners serving under Napoleon Bonaparte.

St. Louis Mary’s Tower

Comino Sunrise

In 1618, the Knights of the Order of Malta erected St. Peter’s in the city. Mary’s Tower on the plans of the architect Vittorio Cassar. It serves as a surveillance post in case of foreign invasion, but must always dissuade pirates and smugglers from using Comino as a hideout. In the 20th century, the tower was again active during the wars of 14-18 and 39-45. Owned by the Armed Forces of Malta for 33 years, it is now a surveillance post against smuggling and poaching of migratory birds. In 2002, St Mary’s Tower was used as a backdrop for the film “The Revenge of Monte Cristo”: the scenes of the prison of the Château d’If were shot there.

Valletta is the baroque jewel of the Mediterranean! A walk in the capital of Malta is the discovery of a “concentrate” ofarchitecture and monuments never equaled in the world. Valletta is the first city of Malta.

Visiting Valletta – our tips

We recommend that you walk through the streets of Valletta to soak up its warm atmosphere. Also, visit the five must-sees listed earlier in this article.

In addition, if you have the possibility, every Monday and Wednesday a visit of Valletta with a guide is organized. We recommend it without hesitation. Five must-see places to do in Valletta

The 320 monuments of Valletta will take you a whole year to visit! Visiting Malta suggests five places to discover during a day in Valletta, but also to spend a night there.

1 ♥ The Palace of the Grand Masters

grandmaster

Built by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar in 1572, you enter the daily life of Maltese politics: The palace houses the Chamber of Deputies, the office of the President of the Republic of Malta. In the right wing, the museum of medieval weapons and armors reminds us how difficult it must have been to wage war with so many kilos of metal on your shoulders… The charm and the shade of the garden, the time for a break before continuing your stroll in Valletta… (Count on about 1h30 of visit)

2 ♥ La Casa Rocca Piccola

casa rocca picola

La Casa Rocca Piccola is located 100 meters from St. George’s Square… You enter the property of the family of Marquis De Piro. Splendid residence and only palace of Valletta inhabited by private individuals. With 50 rooms, most of which are open to the public, and its private collections, you will travel through 400 years of Valletta’s history. The welcome is friendly. The tunnels built under the Casa Rocca Piccola were used as air raid shelters during the Second World War… Beautiful small interior garden (visit: about 1 hour – A good choice of books on Malta at the store)

3 ♥ St. John’s Co-Cathedral

cathedralevalletta

Jewel of Valletta, the first stone of the co-cathedral Saint-Jean was laid in 1573 according to the plans of the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar. Sober on the outside, the building contains the exuberance ofBaroque art and the signatures of emblematic artists: Caravaggio, Mattia Preti. The pavement composed of marble slabs houses the tombs of the knights. Eight wonderful chapels dedicated to the eight languages of the Order of St. John surround the nave. Spend about 2 hours in Valletta.

4 ♥ Upper Barrakka Gardens

Start-of-the-31st-Rolex-Middle-Sea-Race-from-the-Upper-Barrakka-Gardens-Photo-credit-Rolex-Kurt-Arrigo

Landing in the gardens of Upper Barrakka: the place loved by all Maltese! Its benches and well-kept flowerbeds offer a panorama of the “Three Cities” and the Grand Harbour that is simply breathtaking! (free access every day from sunrise to sunset – public toilets)

5 ♥ The Waterfront Docks

valletta-waterfront-franco-tabone

The Waterfront was once used as a boathouse and unloading area under the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.
The Waterfront has been refurbished and is now a venue for Valletta’s cultural events with its beautiful terraces of cafes and restaurants. From this place you will contemplate the gigantism of the cruise ships calling at Valletta.
Tip: Use the large elevator located in Upper Barrakka Gardens to reach the docks.

We recommend you to be very early to visit Valletta and to spend the evening there as well. In summer, spend the hottest hours in museums (air-conditioned!). In churches, decent dress is always required at the entrance.

Valletta, capital of Malta

Guided tour of Valletta

As explained earlier in the article, we recommend that you take a guided tour if you have the opportunity. There is so much to say about these streets with their many stories. Below is the link to find out more and book the tour with the leading Maltese certified guide organization. They are very knowledgeable and you can choose your preferred language.

For more independence, you can also book a private guide to take the Valletta tour. The price is 200€ for half a day.

Getting to Valletta

The city’s public transportation service is very good. There is a bus terminal and several ferries to Sliema, the 3 cities and even directly to and from Gozo, it is called the Gozo fast ferry. However, if you rent a car, it will be difficult to park or even get there due to rush hour traffic.

Malta – Valletta airport transfer

My favorite hotel in Valletta

L’Osborne Hotel is an establishment located in the fortifications of Valletta, offering air-conditioned rooms with Wi-Fi. It features a rooftop pool and buffet restaurant. The hotel is popular with couples for its location close to the best sights and public transport. Expect to pay around €190 for one night.

Where to stay in Malta?

Distances are short between the various sites of interest in Malta. It is possible to cross the island of Malta in length in less than 1 hour. So, if you are wondering for how many nights to take your accommodation in Malta, you can say, the whole duration of your stay.

Let’s have a look at the different cities and areas of Malta and Gozo to let you decide and then we will give you our personal opinion.

Lodging in Valletta

Our recommendation for tour enthusiasts.

Valletta is the capital of Malta and contains many monuments and historical sites that are a must see. This city is also of human size and authentic contrary to what we are used to see in a capital. Valletta is very lively during the day with tourists and at night with its many restaurants and bars. Moreover, walking around in the evening is a real pleasure, there is a good atmosphere.

The city is very well served by public transport. There is a bus station, various ferries to Sliema, the 3 cities and even directly to Gozo. However, if you have rented a car, it will be difficult to park and even to get there due to the traffic during rush hours.

There is no beach in Valletta and prices are more expensive than on the rest of the island.

For vacation rentals in Malta or Gozo, we recommend this site. You’ll find plenty of apartments, houses and villas to rent at the best prices. The managers of these accommodations are very nice, and they also offer practical services (laundry, assistance, activities…).

Lodging in Sliema

We recommend Sliema to most travelers visiting Malta.

Sliema is a very good compromise and is our recommendation for most travelers to Malta. It is a lively city between Valletta and St Julian’s where the nightlife is the most important. Sliema offers a long beach of flat stones where it is still good to settle. Perfect for walking around, seeing the architecture and discovering the many restaurants, bars and cafes. Gzira, located south of Sliema, is a favorite spot for expatriates for good reason.

Sliema is also very well served by bus, many excursions leave from Sliema. There is a ferry to Valletta, the capital.

In addition, Sliema’s accommodations are varied and the prices are generally more affordable than in Valletta.

The 1926 Sun Hotel & Spa in Sliema is Malta’s most Instagrammable hotel. It’s conveniently located near the beach and ferry terminal. Lodging at St Julian’s

We recommend St Julian’s (Paceville) for young people and those who want to party.

St Julians (San Ġiljan in Maltese) is a popular spot for young people, many of whom study English here. Paceville is a district of St Julian’s known as the place to party in Malta. There are many bars, clubs, discos and nightclubs for special parties. The city has the small beach of St George’s Bay which is quickly full in summer, but always pleasant. There is also one of the beautiful bays of Malta called Spinola bay, a little before Sliema.

St Julian’s is close to Sliema so it is also well served by bus. If you want to relax and party, Sliema is the place for you.

The city has similar prices to Sliema, more affordable than Valletta.

Lodging in the north of Malta, in Mellieha

We recommend Mellieha for those who want to relax in a large, quiet and affordable hotel.

Perfect for families and people who want to relax on the beaches of Malta. In Mellieha is Ghadira Bay, a large sandy beach accessible. There is more space, so you can find villas for rent and large hotels, do not expect to see a city.

As far as transportation is concerned, you will have easy access to buses, but the easiest way is tohave a car or at least a scooter to get to the points of interest.
Valletta and Sliema are about 30 minutes by car and 1 hour by bus depending on traffic, count about 25 euros for a cab. The airport is 45 minutes away.
There is also a ferry to Gozo and Comino at Cirkewwa near Mellieha so it is convenient to go there for a day.

Since you are located in a remote area, housing prices are not very high compared to the cities mentioned above.

Lodging in Saint Paul’s Bay

Our recommendation for families.

Saint Paul’s Bay, also known as San Pawl il-Baħar in Maltese. This bay contains the cities of Bugibba and Qawra. It is a good place to mix relaxation by the sea, walks and outings. Indeed, there are many bars, restaurants and beautiful walks to do on the extensive esplanades. There is the National Aquarium of Malta, there are few sandy beaches, but you can go to the famous Café del mar to relax by the infinity pool.

To get around, there are buses at the Bugibba terminal. It also takes 30 minutes to get to Valletta or one hour by bus. Many excursions leave from the bay of Saint Paul towards Comino or Gozo.

Accommodation in Malta to suit your needs

Cheap accommodation in Malta

For cheap accommodation in Malta, you’ll need to sleep outside the tourist zone (Sliema, St Julians, Valletta). You’ll find cheaper hotels and rentals inland and to the north of Malta. If you want to stay in the tourist part of town while paying less, you’ll have to opt for youth hostels or budget hotels.

Where to sleep in Malta as a family with children?

For families with children, we recommend staying in St Paul’s bay, close to the start of excursions, the aquarium and the sandy beach of Mellieha. You can also book accommodation in Sliema, which is very active without being too noisy. If you rent a car, you can also stay in the Mellieha area, in the north of Malta.

Where to sleep and party in Malta?

If you want to party, you’ll have to go straight to St Julian’s, near Paceville. Or Sliema, if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle but still close enough.

Where to stay in Malta without a car?

The best places to stay in Malta without a car are in Sliema, Valletta, St Julians, St Paul’s Bay or the Three Cities. In fact, these areas are very well served by public transport (buses and ferries).

Accommodation in Malta

In order to find accommodation that really suits you, Visit Malta presents the different accommodation options:

Staying in a hotel in Malta

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

Spread throughout Malta and Gozo, the majority of hotels are nevertheless concentrated by the sea, on the north coast of Malta.
From very economical establishments that provide rudimentary services to the comfort of luxurious five-star hotels, the offer is complete and eclectic.

The interesting cities of Malta: Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities have few hotels, but they have a lot of character and authenticity.

👉 View hotels in Valletta

👉 View hotels in Senglea (The 3 Cities)

👉 View hotels in Mdina

Conversely, Bugibba or Mellieħa, large seaside resorts, concentrate the majority of the 200- to 400-room establishments found in tour operators’ brochures. Cafes, bars and restaurants, indoor and outdoor pools, sports facilities, children’s activities, spa… are all available. Suitable for “relaxing” vacations, we sometimes have to deal with a frightening hubbub.

Hotel and spa 1926

A good alternative is to choose a hotel in St. Julian’s or Sliema with something for every budget. From these two cities, you can easily travel by bus all over the island and many establishments have private parking lots. The beautiful waterfront offers very pleasant walks all year round. Beautiful terraces and world cuisine: the restaurants and cafes of Sliema and St Julian’s allow you to eat throughout the day.

👉 View hotels in Sliema

For this, we recommend without hesitation the Hotel and SPA 1926, ideally located and very pleasant.

Choosing to stay in a hotel in Marsaskala or Marsaxlokk is also a good option. More confidential, these destinations are family and less frequented. Another atmosphere of stay with a more relaxed rhythm.

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

For your accommodation in Gozo, you will find all categories of hotels. The largest and busiest are in Marsalforn, to the north. The quietest ones in the nice bay of Xlendi. The hotels in Victoria offer the advantage of being located in the heart of the island.

Staying in a guest house in Malta

guest room

Increasingly popular in Malta and Gozo, guest houses offer the spirit of a family guesthouse. It is a way of accommodation that allows you to establish relationships with the population, to discover the culture of the country and to taste the Maltese family cuisine if you take some meals there.

Because the Maltese are friendly and very helpful, the owners of the guest houses will be happy to talk to you and give you the right information and tips. Depending on the category, they are beautiful character houses or more recent constructions with 4 to 10 rooms.

Note: Staying in a guest house is a good way to practice your English

Staying in a Youth Hostel in Malta

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

For those on a tight budget, youth hostels, also known as backpackers, are mainly for young people but not only. The choice is unfortunately limited in Malta. Nevertheless, there are a few, notably in Sliema, and in Mgarr (Gozo).

Another possibility is the residences intended for students and adults on a language stay, which, depending on the season, can be open to everyone.

Accommodation in Malta

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

The only campsite in the archipelago is in Daħlet ix-Xmajjar, near Mellieħa. At 50 meters from the sea and 5 minutes walk from the sandy beach Armier Beach.

Located in the middle of a very beautiful wild place, poorly served by buses, it is not very frequented and does not have a shady place, difficult to sleep under the tent!

Wild camping is strictly forbidden on the whole archipelago. Nevertheless, it seems that it is tolerated, because we can sometimes see camps near the beaches during the weekend…

Staying in an apartment in Malta

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

With family or friends, renting an apartment is a wise and economical choice. Real estate agencies in Malta and Gozo all offer “short term” rental apartments equipped with one or more bedrooms. This formula combines comfort and independence.

Another possibility for families and groups of friends is the apartment-hotel. It combines the advantages of a hotel (use of facilities, swimming pool, games, cleaning on request, etc.) with those of an apartment.

Staying in a farmhouse in Gozo

Accommodation in Malta and Gozo

A Gozitan specialty, farmhouses are well-restored 18th century farmhouses in northwest Gozo, in the Għarb and Għasri area. Beautiful modern villas in local stone respect the ancient style with arcades and porches and also bear the same name.

The services are top-of-the-range: gardens with trees, swimming pool and spa. The rooms are often tastefully decorated. There are agencies that specialize in renting farmhouses.

Charm and calmness assured, renting a farmhouse is ideal for those who dream of vacations in the countryside while being close to the sea.

Inhabited for thousands of years, haunted by the beautiful Calypso, Gozo’s cultural heritage is as rich as its history of Greek, Roman, Arab and European conquests. Archaeology, religious art, museums, remarkable sites to discover.
A land of escape, culture and challenges, Gozo also seduces by the quality of its beaches, its crafts and its local products.

Its beauty

Welcome to Gozo!
At only 14 km long and 7 km wide, Gozo rewards you for choosing to visit it with a beautiful and unique scenery. Its relief is a succession of steep hills, rocky ridges and very deep valleys. The countryside of Gozo, green and flowery in spring, is a mosaic of terraced fields, winding roads, narrow surrounded by high stone walls that join the traditional farms, scattered villages and other towers perched at 120 meters above sea level.

It is from the ramparts of the citadel of Victoria that one admires best this set with a 360° view.

Exploring Gozo’s coastline opens up unusual, wild and well-preserved panoramas. To the west, Djewa Point with its inland sea (Il Qwara), its arch ” Azure Window ” provide thrills despite it collapsed a few years ago. Continuing north, stop at the Xwejni Bay salt flats, carved into the yellow rock and terraced since Roman times. To the south, the cliffs of Ta’Cenc overhang the Mediterranean by 200 meters and contain traces of prehistoric roads dug into the rock (cart ruts). From there, coastal routes allow you to reach the pretty little bay of Xlendi or the peaceful cove of Mgarr Ix-Xini.

Victoria (7000 inhabitants), the capital of Gozo built in the heart of the island, is the cultural and historical crossroads. Formerly called Rabat, it owes its name to the celebration of Queen Victoria’s sixtieth birthday in 1897. With its citadel, a real fortified city, its Basilica of Saint George and all its museums, it is a delight for culture and history lovers. One loses oneself with delight in its maze of pedestrian lanes. The inner courtyards of the old houses, the sleeping cats: everything here breathes calm and serenity.

When you leave Victoria, you can clearly see the towns and villages: built mostly on hills, the small towns of Gozo all have a church or a chapel that dominates and around which daily life is organized.
Make a stop in Nadur, Qala or Għarb! In the square you will find a café terrace, a small food shop and always a relaxing atmosphere.

Along the coastal path and the cliffs, on the north of the island of Gozo, west of the village of Marsalforn, you will not miss the salt marshes. These salt pans are not sufficient for a large production of salt, just for the island.

Its history

Ggantija Temples (2)

From Ġgantij temples built long before the Pyramids of Egypt, to the neo-classical churches of the 20ᵉ century, Gozo’s 67 sq. km. of Gozo are dotted with unforgettable sites.

The mysterious cart ruts of Id-Dwejra (roads dug in the rock) continue to fuel the questions of researchers. To the north, Calypso’s cave takes you into one of the most beautiful and mysterious legends of Greek mythology. Around Qala, you can visit the neolithic remains of Tal-Qighan and see ancient mills.

If you are interested in religious art, no less than 33 churches are worth a visit. The one in Xewkija, the rotunda of St. John the Baptist, has one of the largest domes in the world. The sanctuary of Ta’ Pinu and the Basilica of St. George of Victoria are inspired by the Baroque period. Enclosed in the citadel, the Cathedral was built in 1697 with Gozo limestone. And everywhere in every town and village, more intimate chapels bear witness to the Catholic faith of the people of Gozo.

Its human warmth

Far from the hustle and bustle of the world, the life of the 30,000 inhabitants is punctuated by the ferries. Every day, about 2,000 of them use it to go to work in Malta, which they leave every evening to return to Gozo. Even though life in Victoria is a little more hectic with its shops and administration, Gozo is a relaxed and simple place. Here everyone knows each other and takes the time to talk.

Proud of their island, the Gozitans welcome visitors warmly and are happy to inform you with a smile and good humor. The cats, as numerous as the inhabitants, will hardly watch you, because here everyone feels safe.

Gozo (Għawdex in Maltese) means “joy” and the word alone sums up what the island provides to those lucky enough to know it!

Its sports activities

Diving (12)

Gozo is world-renowned for its diving. Gozo has breathtaking natural underwater scenery as well as interesting shipwrecks. Its highly qualified diving clubs cater to both beginners and more experienced divers.

For climbing, whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, looking for a rock in the heart of the island or a route on the cliffs, Gozo offers a large choice of routes and supervision by professional guides. Its steep cliffs, rocky bays and hidden caves can be explored by sea kayak.

Gozo’s small roads and paths offer a multitude of interesting routes for walking and cycling. It is a real paradise for hikers who can enjoy the coastal path that goes around the island. It takes about 4 days if you want to do it all. Find here the routes of the best hikes in Malta and Gozo.

In Gozo, it is also good to go quad biking, biking, motorcycling, try out the gyropod and many other activities.

Tip: With the My Little Malta discount card, you’ll get up to 30% off these activities and equipment rentals. Find out more in our article.

Its beaches

San Blas Bay (3)

With its two beautiful red sand beaches, Ramla Bay and San Blas Bay, and the smaller yellow sand beaches at Marsalforn and ix-Xlendi, Gozo is home to some of the best beaches in Malta, so quiet and natural. The water, crystal clear, is ideal for swimming, diving, paddling, sunbathing and picnicking!

Find here the best beaches in Gozo .

There are many other equally pleasant places to swim between the rocks.

Its local products and crafts

honey_1

Among the Mediterranean specialties, we find the honey of Gozo, clear and liquid and delicate, as well as the olive oil, although very little produced for the moment, it is gradually developing.
And many other things to put in your basket: tapenades, liqueur, cheeses, capers, wines, dried tomatoes, home-made jams…
You will be able to taste and buy these local products in the specialized stores of Victoria, but also directly from the producers on their farms or in small artisanal transformation workshops.

Between glass blowers, potters, blacksmiths and ceramic jewelers, Gozo’s craftsmanship is rich in know-how. You will also come across lace makers who crochet with talent or knitters who sit on their doorsteps making comfortable wool sweaters with Irish motifs. (Ta’ Dbiegi craft village near St Lawrence).

To visit Gozo, it is possible to stay one or two nights. The nightlife is not very lively in Gozo but you can relax in a good restaurant.

If you are looking to take your time, you like authenticity, calm and nature, then Gozo will suit you well. I recommend you to rent a room in a farmhouse or a guesthouse to enjoy the best of it.

Read our article on where to sleep in Gozo.

Gozo in one day

If you want to go around the island to discover the atmosphere, the monuments and the landscapes of Gozo in one day, it is quite feasible. In this case, you can either go by yourself by ferry from Malta and then rent a means of transport on the spot or by tourist bus.

Alternatively, a good option that will save you time and not cost you much more, is to take a organized tour from Malta .

On the agenda for the day:

A shuttle will pick you up at your hotel in Malta and take you to Gozo with a private boat (to avoid waiting for the ferry). If the weather allows it, you will then pass by Comino and its incredible blue lagoon. Once there, you will take your transportation and your English-speaking guide will take you to the best places on the island of Gozo. He will explain to you all the most interesting information of your visit and at noon you will enjoy an excellent local Gozitan meal.

The organizer of these tours is Yippee Malta, they are the most reputable, they have very good reviews (4.9 out of 5), their fleet of vehicles is recent and the guides are qualified and pleasant.

Visit the Three Cities

If they have in common 4.5 kilometers of gigantic fortifications – The Cotonnera Lines (1670), the three cities of the Three cities each have their own particularities, their charms and above all their panoramic views, each one as magnificent as the next. We therefore encourage you to take the time to discover the three cities, well-shod, because you will have to climb countless majestic stairs!

Three Cities: charm and splendor of Malta

How to get to the 3 cities?

  • If you are traveling by bus, arrive directly at Senglea (bus line 1 from Valletta).
  • By car, park in Cospicua.
  • More picturesque, by boat, from the pier of Valletta, the regular shuttle serves only Vittoriosa which makes the inhabitants of Senglea grumble, forcing them (and you too…) to use the metal footbridge. But rest assured you will always find a charming Luzzu to cross the Grand Harbour.
Three Cities: charm and splendor of Malta

Our itinerary to visit the 3 cities

Senglea (also known as Isla) , one of Malta’s smallest towns (but with a population of 4,000), is where we like to start our tour of the Three Cities. On its southern facade, it is “the laborious and working-class Malta”, with a view from the bastions, on the ship repair yards, the cranes and the large hangars. The popular Malta which has not always had a good reputation in the past!

You can walk along the docks and take a circular tour of Senglea or cut through one of its cross streets with stairs. Calm and authenticity. Not often visited, the locals will say hello and smile back more than anywhere else in Malta, because the town is simply friendly!

Go to Senglea Point for its Safehaven garden: one of the best places to admire Valletta and the incessant maritime life of the Grand Harbour

To reach Cospicua, there are two possibilities : to go out of Senglea through the magnificent city gates, built in 1551, or to go along the old docks (1776), which have been recently refurbished and which played an important role during the time of the English Navy and during the Second World War.

Three Cities: charm and splendor of Malta

The main entrance to Cospicua – or Bormla – is impressive with its arches (St Helen Gate) . It is at the top of this doubly fortified city of the Three Cities that one can discover and appreciate once again the genius of the military defenses (17th century) in Malta.

Three Cities: charm and splendor of Malta

Once back down to water level, continue your walk in Vittoriosa or Birgù – the city of the Three Cities that will take you the longest! Not that it is huge (only 50 hectares) but so rich in heritage that it is as breathtaking as Valletta!

Knights’ inns, sumptuous palaces, ornate churches, museums, forts… Vittoriosa is doubly important in the history of Malta because it was here that the Knights landed from Rhodes in 1530 – they made it the capital of Malta temporarily – and the strategic place where the Great Siege was won in 1565 against the Ottomans.

Beyond the heritage, getting lost in the streets of Birgù is a similar delight to Senglea: Dare to talk! The Maltese of the Three Cities will take the time to tell you about Malta! As for the docks of Vittoriosa, they welcome the most luxurious yachts of the Mediterranean, another pleasure for the eyes. From Birgù, you can take the bus (Lines 2 and 3) or of course the boat to prolong the magic of the Three Cities at nightfall

One of the only seaside resorts to be preserved from modern buildings, its picturesque waterfront and its lovely fishing port are a must during your stay in the Maltese archipelago.

Marsaxlokk, a historical town in Malta

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century B.C., its port has preserved the original and characteristic shape of the ports of that historical period. On the heights of Marsaxlokk, you can discover the remains of the Temple of Tas Silg, successively occupied by the Romans and then the Christians.
Geographically exposed, the Marsaxlokk roadstead, the second most important of Malta, had to face the Turkish invaders during the Great Siege of 1565 (450th anniversary commemorations in 2015) and then during the World War 39-45, it was used as a landing place for Allied seaplanes.
In December 1989, Marsaxlokk became a world-famous city, because it was here in Malta that Presidents Bush and Gorbachev met, an exchange that heralded the end of the Cold War. Read our article on thehistory of Malta to learn more.

But the “treasure” of this pleasant fishing port lies in its innumerable Luzzu: boats decorated with the eye of Isis, built according to the Phoenician tradition and which all answer a precise “color code”. The magic is particularly present, during the week, at sunrise with the return of the boats. … Malta the authentic belongs to the early risers!

Paceville, capital of the Maltese nightlife https://mylittlemalta.com/paceville/ https://mylittlemalta.com/paceville/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2023 11:12:59 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/paceville-capital-of-the-maltese-nightlife/ Paceville never sleeps! Capital of Malta 365 nights a year, Paceville is a concentration of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and other “gentlemen clubs“. Every evening in the summer, thousands of people crowd into this area of St Julian’s: Maltese, expatriates, holidaymakers, students… A must for Maltese white nights, Paceville, you either love it or you hate it….

History of Paceville

Paceville, a peaceful seaside resort of the 1930s

Paceville, capital of the Maltese nightlife

In the 1930’s, Paceville (pronounced Pacheville!) became an exclusive seaside resort when Dr. Giuseppe Pace decided to build residences for the British. If some of them, of colonial style, are still standing today, they are surrounded by large buildings and hotels. The palazzo “Villa Rosa” with its magnificent terraces overlooks the beach of St George’s Bay. Vestige of another era, it has been transformed into 15 luxury apartments, count 1000 euros per night…

Paceville, a place of celebration for 45 years!

Paceville, capital of the Maltese nightlife

After independence and according to the development plans of the Ministry of Tourism of Malta, three large hotels were built in Paceville: a Sheraton, a Hilton and the Saint George’s complex on the sea front.

In the wake of the 70’s, in order to respond to a growing flow of vacationers, mostly English, they demolished, built and expanded in spite of town planning rules and building permits… Paceville quickly became a major tourist nightlife attraction.

Going out in Paceville

Paceville, capital of the Maltese nightlife

Paceville during the day

If you are looking for “Pace” (peace in Italian!) during your stay in Malta, Paceville is not the place to be! Although… The district is very quiet during the day, as if it were asleep compared to its torrid nights. Nice air-conditioned stores in the Bay Street shopping center, a movie theater, a bowling alley and a white sandy beach in the heart of the city, shaded terraces for lunch.

Evenings in Paceville

From 6 pm onwards, there is a perceptible change of atmosphere. Groups of young people from the language schools of St Julians and Sliema converge on Paceville for a drink. Every student in the world knows where Paceville is before they set foot in Malta!
In downtown Paceville, what we call the “stairs”: Music remains at an acceptable level of sound until 10pm in most establishments. Then, it is difficult to be heard as the decibels rise in power until 5 o’clock! A joyful linguistic and musical cacophony in the streets invaded by young and not so young people from the five continents!

Our advice

Paceville is full of excellent restaurants, located more quietly, away from the “Stairs”, remember to reserve!

There are some nice casinos in Malta, you will find the majestic Dragonara nearby in Paceville.

As far as safety is concerned, Paceville, although the general atmosphere is rather good-natured, just stay alert and experience a lively night out!

Sliema : Visit, stay and what to do https://mylittlemalta.com/sliema/ https://mylittlemalta.com/sliema/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2023 11:06:28 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/sliema-visit-history-and-tips/

A favorite strolling spot for many Maltese and expatriates alike, Sliema is Malta’s most dynamic coastal town and a popular choice foraccommodation: its waterfront stretches for over three kilometers, and the eastern part offers extraordinary views of Valletta. A resort town since the 19ᵉ century, visiting the more confidential neighborhoods of Sliema brings a different approach to this former small fishing port.

What to do in Sliema

Walking in Sliema

Sliema doesn’t offer the historic landmark that Valletta does, but this central Maltese town is a very pleasant place for a stroll. The best walks in Sliema are the following:

Point de Tigné

Point de Tigné is a must-see destination in Sliema. Nestled on a rocky peninsula, this spot offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll past The Point shopping center and over the padlock-covered bridge celebrating love. Point de Tigné is also known for its famous Fort Tigné, a historic site that bears witness to Malta’s rich past. Photographers will be delighted by the sunsets.

Streets of Sliema

The streets of Sliema offer a charming and photogenic atmosphere, with their colorful buildings and typical balconies. The narrow streets are lined with boutiques, lively cafés and restaurants, offering visitors a lively, friendly atmosphere. Wrought-iron balconies, known as “gallarija”, add a unique architectural touch to Sliema. Here are a few pleasant walks in Sliema. Click to view map :

  1. To admire Valletta from Sliema, perfect at dusk.
  2. Morning stroll through Old Sliema.
  3. Stroll along the water’s edge from Torri to Qui Si Sana. You can continue towards St Julians to Independence Gardens, a pleasant, safe park with children’s play areas.

Sliema beaches

Sliema has no real sandy beaches. There are, however, rocky beaches accessible by ladder. Here are some of Sliema’s beaches:

Tigné Point beach

Soak up the sun on this beach at Tigné Point. With its shallow waters, it’s the ideal place to relax, swim and bask, with a lovely view over Valletta.

Balluta Bay Beach

Nestled in a picturesque bay, Balluta Bay is a man-made beach close to the palm-fringed waterfront. Not the most beautiful beach, but very convenient.

Qui-Si-Sana Beach

Located close to the center of Sliema, Qui-Si-Sana beach offers easy access to the sea for a refreshing swim. Its peaceful setting and calm waters make it a popular spot for families and bathing enthusiasts.

Fond Ghadir Beach in Sliema

Fond Għadir Beach

This beach is Sliema’s most popular with tourists. It’s famous for its natural rock pools, also known as Roman baths, perfect for relaxing. Here you can enjoy a lazy day and snorkel in the turquoise waters. The beach is just below the Surfside restaurant. There’s a lifeguard, toilets and showers.

Restaurants in Sliema

Probably one of the best things to do in Sliema is to discover and sample its many restaurants serving local Maltese and international cuisine. Here is a selection of Sliema restaurants to try:

  1. Ta’ Kris Restaurant – This family-run restaurant offers traditional Maltese cuisine in a warm atmosphere. Tasty dishes such as fenek (rabbit) and ricotta ravioli are served with friendly, attentive service.
  2. Fresco’s Cafe & Restaurant – Simple restaurant overlooking the bay offering local dishes as well as pastas, pizzas, grills, cocktails and caffeinated drinks.
  3. Tiffany’s Bistro – Comforting international specialties like pad thai, burgers and pasta dishes served in a welcoming setting.
  4. Ali Baba – Lebanese restaurant to try. Try the excellent hummus.
  5. The Brew – If you’re a fan of craft beer, The Brew is the place for you. This pub offers an impressive selection of local and international beers, accompanied by delicious pub food. You can enjoy classic dishes such as burgers, fish and chips and chicken wings, all in a friendly atmosphere.

Living in Sliema

With 14500 inhabitants per square kilometer, Sliema is the most densely populated city in Malta and the one where people live most intensively: cafes, restaurants, hotels along the waterfront, from Balluta Bay to the entrance of Manoel Island, competing with well exposed terraces at the foot of flat rock beaches or offering an unforgettable view on Valletta at any time of the day or night. Moreover, real estate developers have not been mistaken because Sliema is the coastal city with the most buildings in the whole archipelago, not always of the best taste … but all very expensive!

History of Sliema

Although it may not seem like it at first glance, Sliema is a city ofhistory in Malta. While walking along its waterfront, one discovers the Fort of Tigné -1793 and the Fort of Cambridge-1878 (under rehabilitation), strategically built at the entrance of Marsamxett Harbour by the Knights and then the British.
But in addition to the military issue, Sliema became the resting place of the great families of Valletta from the 19th. The town developed very quickly around the “Stella Maris”-1855 Church-with elegant townhouses and Victorian-style villas. This area of Sliema also has the largest number of streets with English names in Malta.
Go through this grid of streets with beautiful facades, more cheerful than those of Valletta and little frequented. And the higher you climb in Sliema, the more you will be surprised to discover shops from another time, hidden gardens, a simple, authentic neighborhood life.

Only a 10 minute walk from the lively waterfront…

Sliema districts

Starting point for cruisers, the Sliema waterfront, called “Strand” is the economic nerve center of Malta, the place for shopaholics and the Maltese capital of online gaming companies (sports betting, poker, etc.)!

From Balluta Bay to Qui si Sana, the northwestern waterfront is more relaxing with Independent Garden, Exiles Point, its playgrounds or sports training areas above the Mediterranean. A privileged place on summer evenings to organize a picnic or a barbecue evening on the beach.

Gzira, to the south of Sliema, is also a favorite with expatriates for good reason.
