Game of Thrones in Malta: Discover Mdina and other filming locations from the series https://mylittlemalta.com/game-of-thrones-malta/ https://mylittlemalta.com/game-of-thrones-malta/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 16:45:28 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/game-of-thrones-malta/ Welcome to Malta, the island where “Game of Thrones” came to life. Mdina, in particular, will amaze you. The former capital played a key role in the famous series, transforming itself into King’s Landing for filming. A tour of this historic city offers filming locations familiar to any fan of the series.

Each episode seems more alive when you recognize the filming locations. Vallettathe present-day capital, also plays its part, but it’ s Mdina that really catches the eye. Our reviews of this silent city are unquestionably positive. A day spent here is like a journey through time and space.

When you visit Mdina, every nook and cranny will remind you of a moment from “Game of Thrones”. Intense moments, battles, intrigue, every turn in the city is a new surprise. Despite its status as a former capital, Mdina has lost none of its charm.

Game of Thrones in Mdina: Iconic filming locations

Mdina Gate

Visiting Mdina is like flipping through the pages of a Westeros history book. One of the most emblematic sites is the town’s entrance, which served as the gateway to King’s Landing in the series. Moving the shoot to Dubrovnik

After the first season, the filming of “Game of Thrones” moved to Dubrovnik, Croatia. The main reason for the move was Dubrovnik’s proximity to the sea. King’s Landing is described as a port town in the series, which was not the case for Mdina, located in the center of the island of Malta.

Dubrovnik also offered a larger, more complex set of medieval buildings and streets, which better suited the evolution of the series. But despite this move, Mdina’s impact on the series remains unforgettable, as the town laid the foundations of King’s Landing in the hearts of fans.

Other Game of Thrones filming locations in Malta

What to do in Blue Grotto Getting there? Our advice https://mylittlemalta.com/blue-grotto/ https://mylittlemalta.com/blue-grotto/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 16:45:28 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/blue-grotto/ The Blue Grotto is one of Malta’s natural gems, a must-see destination for any traveler in search of wild beauty and adventure. Comprising a series of seven caves located in Zurrieq, on the island’s south coast, the Blue Grotto is a veritable spectacle of nature. Its name comes from the azure reflections of its translucent waters on the cave walls, a breathtaking natural spectacle, particularly visible during the day.

What to do in Blue Grotto

Boat excursions

As nature and travel lovers, we were lucky enough to enjoy a unique experience during our recent visit to Malta: a boat trip to Blue Grotto. We’d like to share with you the magical moments we experienced during this unforgettable adventure.

From the charming port of Wied iz-Zurrieq, we boarded a“dghajsa“, the traditional Maltese boat. This picturesque boat took us through the blue waters, skirting dizzying cliffs and entering mysterious caves.

Among the many caves we explored, the Grotte de la Réflexion was a particular highlight. Its name comes from the spellbinding reflections that the water casts on its rocky walls, creating an absolutely fascinating light show. We were mesmerized by the dance of light that played out on the cave walls, a palette of colors ranging from intense blue to emerald green, creating a superb spectacle.

blue grotto boat trip

It’s important to note that, like any outdoor adventure, this tour comes with its share of challenges. Weather conditions can be changeable, and excursions may have to be cancelled in the event of rough seas. What’s more, the “dghajsa” are small boats, which could be uncomfortable for those prone to seasickness. However, we sincerely believe that the beauty and magic of this experience far outweigh these minor inconveniences.

Our boat trip to the Blue Grotto lasted about 30 minutes, but the memories you’ll make seem to extend far beyond that. It’s an experience we recommend without hesitation.

Blue Grotto boat tour prices

Visiting the Blue Grotto by boat is pretty accessible. For the boat trip, fares vary slightly depending on the season, but expect to pay around 8-10 euros per adult and 4-5 euros per child.

Please note that there are no ATMs at Wied iz-Zurrieq, the pier from which boats depart for the Blue Grotto. It is therefore advisable to bring enough cash to cover the costs of the visit.

Diving

blue grotto wreck diving

The Blue Grotto is a diver’s paradise. The wreck of the Um El Faroud oil tanker, sunk in 1998, has become one of Malta’s most popular dive sites. Resting at a depth of around 35 metres, the tanker’s imposing structure and the marine life that has taken refuge there make for a striking sight. Experienced divers will be delighted to explore this unique site. For beginners, the Wied iz-Zurrieq reef offers a variety of fish and invertebrates, including barracuda, cuttlefish and moray eels.

For more information on diving in Malta, click here.

Swimming

Although direct bathing from the caves is not recommended due to the rocky walls, on a boat trip during high season, it is possible to dive into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. The waters are generally calm and clear, allowing you to admire the seabed and coral formations while cooling off.

Hiking

There’s more to the Blue Grotto than a simple boat trip to discover its majestic caves. For walkers and nature lovers, hiking trails lead to unspoilt spots. Here you can picnic and enjoy the tranquility of the coves. You can also swim in complete peace of mind.

These hiking trails, stretching along the steep coastline, offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea and the diversity of local flora and fauna. It’s an exceptional way to immerse yourself in the Maltese landscape and discover lesser-known but equally enchanting aspects of the Blue Grotto.

Our tips for visiting Blue Grotto

Schedule selection

For optimal light conditions that will enhance the reflections in the caves, opt fora morning visit to the Blue Grotto.

Choice of outfit

Don’t forget to dress appropriately for sailing and swimming, weather permitting.

Secure your belongings

Be aware of the risk of getting your personal items wet, especially in rough seas. Appropriate protection for your electronic devices and papers is recommended.

Avoid sunburn

The sun can be particularly strong at sea, with little shade on board. Don’t forget your sun protection to avoid burns.

Getting to Blue Grotto

Organized trips to Blue Grotto

Taking a day trip can be a great way to make the most of your time. You can visit some of the must-see places in southern Malta in just one day. Here are the excursions you can book with complete peace of mind:

By bus

Travelling by bus is an economical and environmentally-friendly way to get to the Blue Grotto.

If you’re planning to visit the surrounding area of the Blue Grotto at the same time, we recommend taking the tourist bus. It will enable you to stop at points of interest in the south of the island more easily than the public bus.

Take bus number 74 from Valletta will get you to the site in around 45 minutes to an hour. The bus is certainly slower than the cab or car, but it has the advantage of being more affordable(2 euros/person), which is an important criterion for travelers on a tight budget.

By cab

If comfort and speed are your main concerns, then taking a cab or using a VTC app like eCabs is the way to go. A cab ride from Valletta to the Blue Grotto usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, which is ideal if you’re short of time. These services offer quick and easy booking , making your trip stress-free. However, bear in mind that the cost of a cab or VTC will be higher than that of a bus, and that fares can fluctuate depending on traffic and the time of day.

By car

Finally, if you value independence and flexibility, renting a car may be your best option. By car, you can reach the Blue Grotto from Valletta in around 20-30 minutes. Renting a car costs an average of 35 euros a day, but gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, stopping along the way to discover other places of interest.

1. Mdina

Mdina, in the center of the island of Malta, is the former capital of Malta, today populated by about 300 inhabitants. This is one of the reasons why this medieval walled city is called “The Silent City “. Take a stroll through the narrow streets of this museum city on a sunny afternoon.

2. St John’s cathedral (the co-cathedral of St John)

St. John’s Co-Cathedral is located in the heart of Valletta. It was built between 1573 and 1577 by the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

The exterior may not look like much, but take the time to enter this unique building to discover the exuberance ofBaroque art and to walk past the marble inlaid tombs of the Knights!
It is said that the clever knights, upon the arrival of the French in thirst of precious stones and gold would have painted the gilding and frames in solid gold to “deceive the enemy”. Well done knights!!!

3. The Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni (and its small…)

Incredible gems: the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, classified as a UNESCO heritage site (like dozens of sites in Malta, we’re varnished here!), is a unique place, older than the Pyramids of Egypt! The site has about fifty rooms on about 2,500m2 spread over four levels. WARNING: Despite what the guides say, it is difficult to visit it now because of conservation and current production of a replica (like the Lascaux 2 caves) by our partners from Heritage Malta. Don’t worry, another site has just opened in Mosta: Ta’Bistra and it is less frightening to visit for claustrophobic people!

👉 Book the guided tour of the Hypogeum. To be reserved (well in advance).

4. The Manoel Theater

In the series of “Older”, I ask for the “Manoel Theater”. This theater, built from 1731, is the third oldest in Europe and the oldest among the Commonwealth Nations: hurray, because it is one of the only ones to have survived unscathed to bombings and wars!

My Little Malta recommends a visit with a guide or audioguide to hear all the stories and anecdotes.

5. The megalithic temples of Mnajdra

Composed of two very well preserved temples in the middle of a beautiful environment of the South of the island of Malta, Mnajdra is one of the oldest religious sites on Earth: Imagine -3600 BC! The temples are located 500 meters from Ħaġar Qim (which is also worth it). Do not hesitate to take the audio-guide which will allow you a great freedom in the visit. 6. St Paul’s catacombs

These catacombs located in Rabat were dug by the Romans to bury the dead (I promise, we’ll stop with the graves later!). They were also used by Christians to meet secretly and escape persecution. Learn more about Saint Paul’s catacombs.

7. The temples of Ġgantija

Ġgantija, it means ” tower of the giants ” in Maltese and it is the name of a set of two megalithic temples located in Gozo near Xagħra. Manoel Island, the Forbidden Nugget https://mylittlemalta.com/ile-manoel-malta/ https://mylittlemalta.com/ile-manoel-malta/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 07:45:48 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/manoel-island-the-forbidden-nugget/ Curious and daring, we went to visit this urban wasteland so coveted by speculators of all kinds. Abandoned and closed for decades, Manoel Island contains more than one treasure to discover…

Closed for “Renovation” since 2000

But first a brief history of Manoel Island: A small bridge on the Gzira waterfront, at the beginning of the Strand and the Sliema Promenade, leads to Manoel Island, a picturesque islet covering an area of about 30 hectares placed right in front of Valletta. Green enclave contrasting with the excessiveness of Tigné and Sliema opposite, we still wonder how this corner remained inaccessible and forbidden to visit for over 15 years.

The main feature of the island is Fort Manoel, an eighteenth-century fortification built by the Knights of St. John. According to legend, Don Carlos de Grunenberg, military engineer to the King of Spain, was the first to propose a fort on Manoel Island in 1681. Due to insufficient funds, no final action was taken until the arrival of the Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena and two French engineers (cock-a-doodle-doo!), namely Tigné (not to be confused with another Frenchman, Bailiff Tigné who contributed to the construction of Fort Tigné on the Sliema peninsula opposite in the second half of the eighteenth century) and Mondion, to complete the work.

The most beautiful view of the sumptuous city of Valletta

When it was inaugurated, the fort was logically named in honor of the Grand Master at his initiative (just like the theater of the same name by the way…). With its garrison of 500 men, it was long considered completely impregnable at the time.

In the 20ᵉ century, after suffering devastating attacks and a series of air raids during World War II, Fort Manoel was reduced to rubble and fell into silence.

This was followed by neglect and vandalism after the departure of British forces from Malta in the 1960s and 1970s. Acquired by a privileged few, it was used for very private parties and was even sublet as a set for film shoots(Assassin’s Creed in 2016 in particular). Several years and millions of euros later, this historic jewel has been restored and is coveted today to become a playground for billionaires A luxurious hotel and a marina equipped with 5* service, high-end villas and even a casino on the island’s waterfront…

Maltese diehards to the rescue

This was without counting on the rebellious spirit that sleeps in every Maltese (Asso KEA and the mayor of the city of Gzira Mr Conrad Borg Channel) who forced their way in a few weeks ago. By denouncing the hypocrisy of the public authorities and the projects in progress, they have succeeded in making the island accessible on weekends to all visitors.
A word of advice: get your walking shoes on and get out there fast, before the tide turns and speculators close this jewel for years of elitist construction.

The most beautiful natural sites in Gozo https://mylittlemalta.com/nature-gozo/ https://mylittlemalta.com/nature-gozo/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 07:21:47 +0000 https://mylittlemalta.com/the-most-beautiful-natural-sites-in-gozo/ Mgarr Harbour-Visit Gozo Malta

Visit Gozo… A nice day to schedule during your trip in the archipelago of Malta. We advise you to travel by car or bicycle, as the frequency of buses in Gozo is lower than on the island of Malta. Five sites full of nature that we particularly like and that we recommend you to visit in Gozo:

– Visit the cliffs of Sannat in Gozo

Dingli Cliffs Gozo Malta (2)

Covered with typical Maltese scrubland, the fauna and flora proliferate. It is best to visit the cliffs in spring, blooming with crocuses and wild orchids, or in autumn, covered with meadow saffron. The cliffs reach more than 140 meters high, be careful on windy days. Continuing along the unique path to Ta’Cent, you can discover prehistoric remains. On the way back, stop at the pretty village square of Ta’ Sannat.

Going to the cliffs of Sannat

♦ By car : 10 mn drive from Victoria , from Sannat follow the signs “Cliffs “
♦ By bus: 1 per hour (line 305 takes about 15 minutes from Victoria) then 15 minutes walk following the “cliffs” signs.

Tip : At nightfall, flocks of shearwaters return to their nests: a unique sound experience!

– Visit Inland Sea of Gozo

Thousands of years ago, two limestone caves collapsed and the Inland Sea was born at Dwerja Point. This lagoon, surrounded by cliffs, is connected to the Mediterranean by a natural tunnel. The colors of this place will amaze you: between the crystal clear emerald water and the colorful doors of the fishermen’s houses, you will be amazed. By the way, you can go on board with a fisherman and cross the tunnel! After the passage, you will be able to admire the impressive cliffs and if the weather allows it, you will be able to approach the site of our dear departed Azure Window by the sea.

Getting to the Inland Sea

♦ By car: head towards San Lawrenz and then follow the Dwejra signs.
♦ By bus: 1 per hour ( line311) takes about 30 minutes from Victoria.

Tip: To the right, when going down to the inland sea, get information about the fauna and flora in the Mediterranean at the Panacea office in Malta.

– Visit the salt flats of Gozo

salines gozo Malta

Near Qbajjar Bay, along the beautiful north coast of Gozo, a site to visit: the Gozo salt flats. They extend over about 3 km and date back to Roman times. Passed on from generation to generation, the know-how of its salt exploitation is carried out in the pure Gozo tradition. At the beginning of the summer, the basins are filled with sea water and then, after evaporation, the salt can finally be harvested. At this time of the year you will see the gozitans busy in small warehouses (dug in the rock) for the processing and storage of this precious and small production of Maltese salt.

Going to the salt flats of Gozo

♦ By car from Zebbug or Marsalforn (beware of narrow road! )
♦ By bus: 1 per hour to Qbajjar Bay ( line310, duration about 15 min from Victoria) then walk for 10 minutes.

Tip: Buy fleur de sel directly on site.

– Visit Mgarr Ix Xini Bay in Gozo

mgarr ix xini bay Gozo

Magnificent for swimming and scuba diving, the bay of Mgarr ix Xini must be earned! The access road is narrow and steep and must be used with great caution. It is best to leave your vehicle at the top of the hill and continue on foot: you will have plenty of time to admire the “fjord” on your left and the Watchtower (1661) which guards the entrance to the bay. Then you have the choice: eat (only one establishment), enjoy the small pebble beach or venture into the lovely paths on the hillside. Little frequented until now, Mgarr Ix Xini will surely be famous in the coming months: Angelina Jolie directed her film “By the sea” there from September to November 2014. Film release: May 2015.

Getting to Mgarr Ix Xini

♦ By car: 6 km from Victoria ( go through the village of Sannat)
♦ By bus: 1 per hour to Xewkija(line 323, takes about 10 minutes from Victoria) then 30 minutes walk with a detailed map of Gozo in your pocket!

Tip: Make sure you wear good shoes because the descent is slippery

-Visit Xlendi Bay in Gozo

xlendi tower bay Xlendi Malta Gozo

Like many Maltese, we are particularly fond of Xlendi: its steep path leads to the “Carolina” cave, its walk along the sea reaches the watchtower at the tip of Ras il-Badja but also “Wied Tal kantra”. Wied means dry and winding valley in Maltese: between low stone walls and tamarisk, a lot of authenticity by this nice shortcut and beautiful walks around the pretty fishing of xlendi.

Getting to Xlendi Bay

♦ By car: 6 km from Victoria (go through the village of Munxar)

♦ By bus: 1 per hour – circular line 306 – takes about 20 minutes from Victoria.

Tip: Go to Xlendi at sunset.

Xlendi Gozo Malta

NB: Many visitors regret not visiting Gozo for more than a day: Consider booking a night’s accommodation to extend your stay on the island of Gozo by dedicating 2 days of your trip to the Maltese archipelago.

Five must-see places to do in Valletta

The 320 monuments of Valletta will take you a whole year to visit! Visiting Malta suggests five places to discover during a day in Valletta, but also to spend a night there.

1 ♥ The Palace of the Grand Masters

grandmaster

Built by the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar in 1572, you enter the daily life of Maltese politics: The palace houses the Chamber of Deputies, the office of the President of the Republic of Malta. In the right wing, the museum of medieval weapons and armors reminds us how difficult it must have been to wage war with so many kilos of metal on your shoulders… The charm and the shade of the garden, the time for a break before continuing your stroll in Valletta… (Count on about 1h30 of visit)

2 ♥ La Casa Rocca Piccola

casa rocca picola

La Casa Rocca Piccola is located 100 meters from St. George’s Square… You enter the property of the family of Marquis De Piro. Splendid residence and only palace of Valletta inhabited by private individuals. With 50 rooms, most of which are open to the public, and its private collections, you will travel through 400 years of Valletta’s history. The welcome is friendly. The tunnels built under the Casa Rocca Piccola were used as air raid shelters during the Second World War… Beautiful small interior garden (visit: about 1 hour – A good choice of books on Malta at the store)

3 ♥ St. John’s Co-Cathedral

cathedralevalletta

Jewel of Valletta, the first stone of the co-cathedral Saint-Jean was laid in 1573 according to the plans of the Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar. Sober on the outside, the building contains the exuberance ofBaroque art and the signatures of emblematic artists: Caravaggio, Mattia Preti. The pavement composed of marble slabs houses the tombs of the knights. Eight wonderful chapels dedicated to the eight languages of the Order of St. John surround the nave. Spend about 2 hours in Valletta.

4 ♥ Upper Barrakka Gardens

Start-of-the-31st-Rolex-Middle-Sea-Race-from-the-Upper-Barrakka-Gardens-Photo-credit-Rolex-Kurt-Arrigo

Landing in the gardens of Upper Barrakka: the place loved by all Maltese! Its benches and well-kept flowerbeds offer a panorama of the “Three Cities” and the Grand Harbour that is simply breathtaking! (free access every day from sunrise to sunset – public toilets)

5 ♥ The Waterfront Docks

valletta-waterfront-franco-tabone

The Waterfront was once used as a boathouse and unloading area under the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.
The Waterfront has been refurbished and is now a venue for Valletta’s cultural events with its beautiful terraces of cafes and restaurants. From this place you will contemplate the gigantism of the cruise ships calling at Valletta.
Tip: Use the large elevator located in Upper Barrakka Gardens to reach the docks.

We recommend you to be very early to visit Valletta and to spend the evening there as well. In summer, spend the hottest hours in museums (air-conditioned!). In churches, decent dress is always required at the entrance.

Its beauty

Welcome to Gozo!
At only 14 km long and 7 km wide, Gozo rewards you for choosing to visit it with a beautiful and unique scenery. Its relief is a succession of steep hills, rocky ridges and very deep valleys. The countryside of Gozo, green and flowery in spring, is a mosaic of terraced fields, winding roads, narrow surrounded by high stone walls that join the traditional farms, scattered villages and other towers perched at 120 meters above sea level.

It is from the ramparts of the citadel of Victoria that one admires best this set with a 360° view.

Exploring Gozo’s coastline opens up unusual, wild and well-preserved panoramas. To the west, Djewa Point with its inland sea (Il Qwara), its arch ” Azure Window ” provide thrills despite it collapsed a few years ago. Continuing north, stop at the Xwejni Bay salt flats, carved into the yellow rock and terraced since Roman times. To the south, the cliffs of Ta’Cenc overhang the Mediterranean by 200 meters and contain traces of prehistoric roads dug into the rock (cart ruts). From there, coastal routes allow you to reach the pretty little bay of Xlendi or the peaceful cove of Mgarr Ix-Xini.

Victoria (7000 inhabitants), the capital of Gozo built in the heart of the island, is the cultural and historical crossroads. Formerly called Rabat, it owes its name to the celebration of Queen Victoria’s sixtieth birthday in 1897. With its citadel, a real fortified city, its Basilica of Saint George and all its museums, it is a delight for culture and history lovers. One loses oneself with delight in its maze of pedestrian lanes. The inner courtyards of the old houses, the sleeping cats: everything here breathes calm and serenity.

When you leave Victoria, you can clearly see the towns and villages: built mostly on hills, the small towns of Gozo all have a church or a chapel that dominates and around which daily life is organized.
Make a stop in Nadur, Qala or Għarb! In the square you will find a café terrace, a small food shop and always a relaxing atmosphere.

Along the coastal path and the cliffs, on the north of the island of Gozo, west of the village of Marsalforn, you will not miss the salt marshes. These salt pans are not sufficient for a large production of salt, just for the island.

Its history

Ggantija Temples (2)

From Ġgantij temples built long before the Pyramids of Egypt, to the neo-classical churches of the 20ᵉ century, Gozo’s 67 sq. km. of Gozo are dotted with unforgettable sites.

The mysterious cart ruts of Id-Dwejra (roads dug in the rock) continue to fuel the questions of researchers. To the north, Calypso’s cave takes you into one of the most beautiful and mysterious legends of Greek mythology. Around Qala, you can visit the neolithic remains of Tal-Qighan and see ancient mills.

If you are interested in religious art, no less than 33 churches are worth a visit. The one in Xewkija, the rotunda of St. John the Baptist, has one of the largest domes in the world. The sanctuary of Ta’ Pinu and the Basilica of St. George of Victoria are inspired by the Baroque period. Enclosed in the citadel, the Cathedral was built in 1697 with Gozo limestone. And everywhere in every town and village, more intimate chapels bear witness to the Catholic faith of the people of Gozo.

Its human warmth

Far from the hustle and bustle of the world, the life of the 30,000 inhabitants is punctuated by the ferries. Every day, about 2,000 of them use it to go to work in Malta, which they leave every evening to return to Gozo. Even though life in Victoria is a little more hectic with its shops and administration, Gozo is a relaxed and simple place. Here everyone knows each other and takes the time to talk.

Proud of their island, the Gozitans welcome visitors warmly and are happy to inform you with a smile and good humor. The cats, as numerous as the inhabitants, will hardly watch you, because here everyone feels safe.

Gozo (Għawdex in Maltese) means “joy” and the word alone sums up what the island provides to those lucky enough to know it!

Its sports activities

Diving (12)

Gozo is world-renowned for its diving. Gozo has breathtaking natural underwater scenery as well as interesting shipwrecks. Its highly qualified diving clubs cater to both beginners and more experienced divers.

For climbing, whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, looking for a rock in the heart of the island or a route on the cliffs, Gozo offers a large choice of routes and supervision by professional guides. Its steep cliffs, rocky bays and hidden caves can be explored by sea kayak.

Gozo’s small roads and paths offer a multitude of interesting routes for walking and cycling. It is a real paradise for hikers who can enjoy the coastal path that goes around the island. It takes about 4 days if you want to do it all. Find here the routes of the best hikes in Malta and Gozo.

In Gozo, it is also good to go quad biking, biking, motorcycling, try out the gyropod and many other activities.

Tip: With the My Little Malta discount card, you’ll get up to 30% off these activities and equipment rentals. Find out more in our article.

Its beaches

San Blas Bay (3)

With its two beautiful red sand beaches, Ramla Bay and San Blas Bay, and the smaller yellow sand beaches at Marsalforn and ix-Xlendi, Gozo is home to some of the best beaches in Malta, so quiet and natural. The water, crystal clear, is ideal for swimming, diving, paddling, sunbathing and picnicking!

Find here the best beaches in Gozo .

There are many other equally pleasant places to swim between the rocks.

Its local products and crafts

honey_1

Among the Mediterranean specialties, we find the honey of Gozo, clear and liquid and delicate, as well as the olive oil, although very little produced for the moment, it is gradually developing.
And many other things to put in your basket: tapenades, liqueur, cheeses, capers, wines, dried tomatoes, home-made jams…
You will be able to taste and buy these local products in the specialized stores of Victoria, but also directly from the producers on their farms or in small artisanal transformation workshops.

Between glass blowers, potters, blacksmiths and ceramic jewelers, Gozo’s craftsmanship is rich in know-how. You will also come across lace makers who crochet with talent or knitters who sit on their doorsteps making comfortable wool sweaters with Irish motifs. (Ta’ Dbiegi craft village near St Lawrence).

How long can I stay in Gozo?

This is the question that many travelers ask themselves. The answer is obviously that it depends on what you are looking for and how long you want to stay.

Staying overnight in Gozo

To visit Gozo, it is possible to stay one or two nights. The nightlife is not very lively in Gozo but you can relax in a good restaurant.

If you are looking to take your time, you like authenticity, calm and nature, then Gozo will suit you well. I recommend you to rent a room in a farmhouse or a guesthouse to enjoy the best of it.

If you want to go around the island to discover the atmosphere, the monuments and the landscapes of Gozo in one day, it is quite feasible. In this case, you can either go by yourself by ferry from Malta and then rent a means of transport on the spot or by tourist bus.

Alternatively, a good option that will save you time and not cost you much more, is to take a organized tour from Malta .

On the agenda for the day:

A shuttle will pick you up at your hotel in Malta and take you to Gozo with a private boat (to avoid waiting for the ferry). If the weather allows it, you will then pass by Comino and its incredible blue lagoon. Once there, you will take your transportation and your English-speaking guide will take you to the best places on the island of Gozo. He will explain to you all the most interesting information of your visit and at noon you will enjoy an excellent local Gozitan meal.

The organizer of these tours is Yippee Malta, they are the most reputable, they have very good reviews (4.9 out of 5), their fleet of vehicles is recent and the guides are qualified and pleasant.

Gozo and Comino in the same day

During the day trip by quad bike or tuk tuk with Yippee Malta, it is planned to pass through Comino without spending much time there. If you prefer to spend part of the day at the Blue Lagoon of Comino and visit Gozo in the same day, it is possible. Many travelers with little time to visit the archipelago make this choice with an optimized tour.

In this case, we recommend this half-day boat trip to Comino and then a half-day trip to Gozo by Tuktuk with an English speaking guide with Yippee Malta again.
