There is no direct ferry link between France or Spain and Malta. Ferry connections from these countries are generally directed to Corsica, Sardinia, Algeria, Tunisia or the Spanish islands.

Getting to Malta by boat via Italy

One option would be to take a ferry from Marseille to Sicily, Italy, then another ferry from Sicily to Malta. Grimaldi Lines is one of the companies offering ferries between Marseille and Sicily. Secondly, ferries to Malta are available from several Sicilian ports, such as Pozzallo and Palermo, with companies like Virtu Ferries. Public buses run from Gozo’s capital, Victoria, to the Blue Hole. Lines 311 and 312 will take you there. Fares are around €2.00. Be sure to check times in advance, as they may vary.

By cab

VTC applications such as eCabs offer services on Gozo. It’s a comfortable and practical option, especially if you’re traveling in a group. Fares vary, but expect to pay around €15-20 for a trip from Victoria.

By rental car

The history of Comino

Inhabited since the Roman period, Comino has a history as eventful as Malta and Gozo. In the Middle Ages, its coastline of cliffs with deep caves was a real pirate’s den. Its caves and coves are used as a hiding place to better scuttle the ships cruising between Malta and Gozo and hide the booty. In the seventeenth century, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem used Comino as a private hunting ground for wild boar and hares. Later, in 1800, when the British army regained control of Malta, Comino became a place of deportation for hundreds of French prisoners serving under Napoleon Bonaparte.

St. Louis Mary’s Tower

In 1618, the Knights of the Order of Malta erected St. Peter’s in the city. Mary’s Tower on the plans of the architect Vittorio Cassar. It serves as a surveillance post in case of foreign invasion, but must always dissuade pirates and smugglers from using Comino as a hideout. In the 20th century, the tower was again active during the wars of 14-18 and 39-45. Owned by the Armed Forces of Malta for 33 years, it is now a surveillance post against smuggling and poaching of migratory birds. In 2002, St Mary’s Tower was used as a backdrop for the film “The Revenge of Monte Cristo”: the scenes of the prison of the Château d’If were shot there.

How to get to Comino from Malta

There are “shuttle boats” and “cab boats” to Comino, departing from the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal or from the Marfa bay pier. Both landings are served by bus lines (routes 41, 42, 221, 222, X1, 101, 102) and parking facilities for motorists.

From Sliema or Bugibba, you can go directly to Comino by boat as part of a day trip .

How to get to Comino from Gozo

A similar service allows you to reach Comino from the port of Mgarr and from Hondoq Bay.

Fares and crossing times:

The prices are variable: Count about 10 euros for a return trip to Blue Lagoon. For an additional fee, you can make a detour to the caves.

As for the frequency of the shuttles, it varies according to the seasons and of course the weather. A real sea freeway in summer, the connection with Comino is available every day of the year.

The fort saint elme

Several forts have been built over the centuries in Malta. Some are still standing and have been restored, making them open to the public. Among them, the Fort Saint-Elme of Valletta is the most famous. It contains the National War Museum. You will be able to visit many rooms and discover relics of the Second World War, such as planes, jeeps and even guns from the past. A chapel is also accessible, where the army used to pray.

But Fort St. John Elmo is not the only one on the island. You can also find Fort Rinella in Kalkara or Fort Saint Angelo in Birgu. As for Fort Manor, it is not open permanently and is only accessible during certain cultural events.

Hagar qim is a historical must-see on your trip to Malta. It is a prehistoric temple from 3200 BC on a hill. It’s not the best to visit when it’s raining but most of the temple is covered so you can enjoy it.

Maltese salaries being lower than in Northern Europe, prices here are overall 20% cheaper for the same quality. Another particularity is that the stores can sell out all year round: in other words, it is a paradise for shopping addicts!

All styles and all prices, apart from the great French or Italian perfumes, Swiss watches, you will not find any prestigious high fashion brands in Malta but more of an offer of Italian high end ready to wear. How to choose the right size while shopping in Malta and Gozo?

The sizes of the clothes are labeled in English (8-10-12-14-16-18) with sometimes the equivalence of European size. For shoes, a euro size 37 is equivalent to an English size 4 and Italian shoes are known to fit larger than Europe ones. The best thing to do if you’re not sure is to go through the fitting process.

On the reception side, if the hello is not always there, nobody will harass you to sell you something: you will be free to look, try, or go out again!

Where to shop in Malta

Shopping in Valletta

Yes, definitely in Valletta because it is a real shopping paradise! All the stores are within a few meters of each other: Jewelry, accessories, fashion, cosmetics, shoes: mainly located in Republic street and Merchant’s street, don’t hesitate to stroll the small cross streets to find the nice little stores.

Shopping in Sliema

Start at Tower Road: filled with stores for all styles and budgets, pass through its shopping mall The Plazza Shopping center and the nearby pedestrian street “Bisazza street”.

Continuing a little further towards Tigné, opposite Valletta, The Point Shopping Mall concentrates the most international fashion brands in the whole Maltese archipelago. For example, very famous brands are present such as Mango and Bershka of the Inditex group, Oysho popular for its women’s underwear and sportswear, River Island or Stradivarius with Spanish tendency. If you like to find clothes, shoes, accessories, perfumes, cosmetics and decoration in one place, you will appreciate the chain Debenhams. To give you an idea, Debenhams is similar to Galeries La Fayette or Galeria Inno, it is a set of brands gathered in one building so that you can find what you are looking for in one place.

Shopping at San Julian’s

Like “The Point”, San Julian’s is the place to be if you like the more luxurious and well-known brands: they are grouped together at the foot of the Portomaso tower(Hugo Boss among others) and in the Bay Street Complex (near Paceville). On Borg Street, cheaper stores for pareos and swimwear.

Shopping in Gozo

It is in Victoria that the stores of Gozo are grouped: In the shopping center The Duke near the bus station and especially in the alleys behind the basilica St George: the corner of the pretty stores…

Tip: In the small streets, do your shopping in the morning because many stores close between 1 and 4:30 pm

Shopping in Mosta

The Pama shopping center is a hypermarket surrounded by stores selling clothes, accessories, shoes, sports equipment, and much more. For men, you will find for example Jules, not very present in Malta. Stores such as The Body shop, Morgan or Benetton will be there to welcome you ladies.

Shopping in the markets of Malta and Gozo

What could be better than shopping outdoors when the weather is nice? For this, there are markets! Good deals and negotiations, it’s up to you! Let yourself be tempted by the charming stalls offering typical Maltese products, souvenirs, food and clothing.

But when it comes to equipment, sports giant Décathlon is present in Malta, close to Sliema. Go sport also has 2 stores, one in Qormi and the other in Burmarrad. Both are near a Kiabi store, the chain store that will dress the whole family!
